To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BAsHon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Steamboat Springs, in the county of Routt and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Turbines, of which the following is a specifica tion.
rlhis invention relates to impulse turbines, and its primary object resides in providing a turbine of simple construction in which a plurality of impulse wheels impart through the intermediary of a planet gearing or other suitable transmission mechanism, a rotary motion to an element upon which they are mounted.
An embodiment of my invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings in the various views of which like parts are similarly designated, and in which,
Figure 1 is a plan view of the turbine, Fig. 2, a vertical section taken along the line 2 2, Fig. 1, and Fig. 3, a horizontal section taken. along the line 3 3, Fig. 2.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, the reference character 2 designates a stationary cylindrical casing which in its circumferential wall has a number of equidistantly disposed nozzle-shaped inlet openings 8. The casing is closed at its top by a removably secured cover 4 and it has in its bottom a central opening 5 for the discharge of motive fluid.
Mounted for rotation within the casing is an element 6 composed of a shaft 7 which carries a pair of circular plates 8 connected by a plurality of vanes 10 and partitions 11. The shaft is rotatably supported upon a step formed upon a spider 12 secured to the casing below the opening in its bottom, and
at a point within the casing below the cover l of the same it extends looselythrough the sun wheel 13 of a planet gearing, which by means of bolts 14: is rigidly secured to thev cover.
The partitions 11 which extend substantially radially from the periphery of the rotary element toward the axis of rotation of the same, divide the space between the two plates into chambers 15. Mounted within these chambers for rotation about axes parallel to the axis of the shaft 7, are the impulse wheels 16 each composed of a central hub and a series of outwardly projecting, equidistantly disposed, curved vanes Specicaton of Letters Patent.

or buckets. The shafts 17 of the wheels 16 project through openings in the upper plate of the element and carry planet gear-wheels 18 which mesh with the sun-wheel 13 which as hereinbefore explained is rigidly secured to the cover of the casing.
The vanes 10 which auxiliary to the partitions 11 connect the plates 8 of the rotary element, are positioned within the chambers 15 forward of the respective impulse wheels with relation to the direction in which the element rotates as indicated by the arrow A in Fig. 3. The vanes are disposed adjacent the periphery of the element to receive the impact of water or other motive fluid entering the casing through the openings 3 and they thus augment the force with which the element is rotated by the rotary move` ment of the impulse wheels. The partitions 11 are of reversed curvilinear form and placed concentrically with relation to the impulse wheels in the adjoining chambers. The vanes 10 are slightly concave and the lower plate of the rotary element has a central opening 19 above that in the bottom of the stationary casing for the exhaust of motive fluid.
In the operation of the turbine, the machine is placed in a pen-stock, in a stream of running water or in any other suitable position with relation to a water-current to compel the Huid to forcibly enter the openings of the casing. Upon entering the casing the water comes in contact with the buckets of the impulse wheels and thereby imparts a rotary motion to the latter which through the instrumentality of the planet gearing is transmitted to the rotary element upon which the impulse wheels are mounted. The water entering the casing also impinges upon the stationary vanes 10 of the rotary element and upon the curved surfaces of the partitions 11 and thereby augments the force with which the element is impelled through the movement of the rotating gears of the impulse wheels around the relatively stationary gear wheel on the casing. During the rotary movement of the element the chambers 15 thereof are brought successively in alinement with the current of water entering the casing and the water is thus continuously effective to impart a rotary movement to the shaft. The water after acting upon the vanes of the wheels and upon the stationary vanes of the rotary ele 110 ment, is rapidly discharged through the centralfopenings 19 and 5 and thus prevents I. claim andgdesire to secure by Letters-Patentis:

In a turbine, a rotary element comprising a shaft, plates on said shaft, Vpartitions dividing the space between the plates into chambers, vanes fixed in said chambers, rotary impulse wheels in said chambers, and a planet gearing comprising planet wheels connected with the impulse-wheels, and a relatively stationary sun-wheel. 3.' In a turbine, a stationary casing having an inlet and an outlet for motive fluid, a rotary element inv said casing comprising a shaft extending through an opening inthe casing, plates on, said shaft and partitions dividing the space between said plates into chambers, rotary impulse wheels in said chambers, and a planet-gearing comprising planet wheels connected with the impulse wheels, andY a sun-wheel fixed on the casing.

7. In a turbine, a stationary, interiorly cylindrical casing having a peripheral inlet and an outlet, a rotary hollow cylinder in the casing having peripheral intake-openings which during rotation of the cylinder register successively with the said inlet, and a discharge-opening which registers with the said outlet, rotary impulse-wheels in the cylinder adjacent its said openings to receive the. impact of a fluid-current entering through the inlet of the casing, and mechanism for converting a rotary movement of said wheels into a rotary movement of said cylinder.
8. In a turbine, a stationary, interiorly cylindrical casing having peripheral inlets and an outlet, a rotary hollow cylinder in the casing, having a peripheral intake opening'which during rotation of the cylinder registers with the said inlets, and a discharge opening which registers with the said outlet, a rotary impulse-wheel and a stationary vane disposed in the cylinder adjacent the intake opening to receive the impact of fluid-currents entering through the inlets of the casing, and mechanism for converting a rotary movement of said wheel into a rotary movement of the cylinder.
9. In a turbine, a stationary, interiorly cylindrical 'casing having a peripheral inlet and an outlet, a rotary hollow cylinder in the casing having a discharge opening registering withv said outlet, curved partitions dividing said cylinder into compartments each having an intake opening in the periphery of the same and each connected with said discharge-opening, rotary impulse wheels in said compartments to receive the impact of fluid currents entering the same through the inlets of the casing, and mechanism for converting a rotary movement of said wheel into a rotary movement of the cylinder.
