ROTARY MOTOR.
aPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,404, dated February 23, 1892-.

To to whom it mat concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. IRISH, of Jordan, in the county of Onondaga, in. the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rotary Motors, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to the class of motors in which a wheel inclosed in a case receives rotary motion from water under pressure ad mitted into said case; and the invention consists in an improved construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter described, and set forth in the claims.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is an edge View of a motor embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same with the front side plate removed to expose the interior of the case with the wheel journaled Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line :0 at, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view of one of the discharge-nozzles of the water-wheel and the adjacent buckets of the case; and Fig. 5 is a transverse section on line y y, Fig. 4.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents an annulus, the inner side of which is formed with a series of buckets a a a, distributed around the said annulus. These buckets are of the form of recesses or depressions, each of which is sloped gradually from one side and terminated abruptly at the opposite side for the purpose hereinafter explained. To opposite sides of said annulus are secured the plates A A, which are concave on their inner sides and formed with waterexits b b, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. Said annulus, with the side plates attached thereto, constitutes the case, which is secured stationary in its position and incloses the rotary water-wheel O. The hub of this wheel is formed with a cylindrical axial cavity extending from one end of the hub partway toward the opposite end thereof, where said hub has the shaft j extending from it. To provide proper axial supports for said wheel, I form one of the side plates A with a tubular hub h, through which the shaft j extends, and the other side plate A, I form with an inwardly-extending hollow journal 2', enter- 3 of the drawings.

The wheel is thus provided with two separate and distinct axial supports, one of which is asolid shaft fixed to the wheel and journaled in the hollow outward projecting hub of the case and the other consisting of the hollow journal projecting inward from the case and e11- tering the hub of the wheel, as shown in Fig. Said journal is open at its outer end, and to the exterior of the side plate A is secured a collar D, to which is connected the pipe P, which admits under pressure either Water or air or steam, as may be desired, to employ as the motive power.
To relieve the wheel 0 from side pressure by the force of the water or air or steam entering the journal 2', I close the inner end thereof and provide slots 2' t" z" for the exit of the aforesaid substance through the sides of the journal, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
The wheel 0 is formed with hollow radial arms 0 0', preferably curved in opposite direct-ions fromwhich the wheel is to turn, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The free end of each arm 0' is provided with .a discharge-nozzle n, which is formed with a segmental closed portion 0, a lip e, extending from said closed portion in opposite direction from what the wheel is to rotate, and an offset e at the junction of the aforesaid lip and the closed portion, in which offset is a slot or port 0 for the escape of the water or air or steam which is directed toward the abrupt sides of the buckets a a. To guide thewater or aforesaid substance more effectually in said direction, I provide the sides of the nozzle n with flanges Z, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. The water or air or steam passes from the journalt' through the arms (3' O and nozzles 77. n and impinges the abrupt sides of the buckets a do, and by the resistance presented by the latter to the water or aforesaid motive power transmits the power to the Wheel 0, which thus receives rotary motion. To utilize this motion, a pulley p or a suitable gearwheel is attached to the shaft j, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
To allow the water-Wheel O to be adjusted so as to compensate for the wear on the nozzles n n and maintain the latter in contact with the annulus A, I make the wheel-arms extensible longitudinally, preferably by inserting the shanks of the nozzles longitudinally movable into the arms 0' O and inserting through the sides of the arms set-screws 0 0, Which engage the shanks of the nozzle.
WVhat I claim as my invention is 1. The improved motor, consisting of an annular case secured stationary in its position and having directly on its inner peripheral Wall a series of buckets distributed around said wall and held stationary therewith, in combination with a revoluble Wheel inside of the case, havinga hollow hub and hollow arms extending from the hub and terminating with nozzles facing the buckets of the case, and a supply-pipe communicating With said hub, as set forth.
2. In combination with the rotary hollow Wheel (1, having arms 0' 0 provided with discharge-nozzles n n at their free ends, and the supply-pipe communicating with the cavity of the hub of said Wheel, the inclosing case secured stationary in its position and composed of the annulus A, formed With buckets a a a, and separate plates A A, secured to opposite sides of said annulus, substantially as described and shown.
3. In combination with the stationary annulus A, formed with the buckets a a a, the rotary hollow wheel 0, having hollow arms G, nozzles n 71, connected longitudinally movable to said arms, and set-screws 0, connected to the wheel-arms and securing there signed my name this 25th dayof August, 1891.
