THE NORRIS PETERS c0. PHOYGLITHOV, WASHINGTON, n. 04
i 4 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JASPER N. SMITH, OF TIVERTON, OHIO.
WAGON-STANDARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 629,618, dated July 25, 1899.
I Application filed December 6, 1893- Serial Nob 98,462. (No model.)
means whereby a wagon-standard may be ,at-
tached to or removed from a bolster or a like support in a convenient and expeditious manner and whereby the locking engagement between the standard and its support may be automatically made, there being no necessity for bolts or like securing devices.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set, forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference-is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a bolster, illustrating the application of a standard thereto having the improvement applied. Fig. 2 isa vertical section taken substantially on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig.
I 3 is a plan view of the device as illustrated in Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is an end view of a bolster and standard, the standard being secured to the bolster by means of the improved locking device.
A represents a bolster which is provided at each end with a strap 10, secured to the bolster by means of rivets 11 or their equivalents, the strap being passed horizontally around the end of the bolster, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings. Each strap 10 is provided upon one or both faces with an opening 12, (shown in Figs. 2 and 4,) the said opening being adapted to register with a corresponding opening made in the bolster. The standards B, that are to be applied to the bol: ster A, may be of any desired construction, and each standard is provided upon one face or upon both of its side faces with an attached I shown in Figs. 2 and4, each spring 13 at its lower end being substantially straight, so that it may be placed parallel with the vertical surface of the straps 10, attached to the bolster. Each spring 13 is provided at its straight lower portion with a pin 14, and these pins, after the standards have been introduced into the bolster in the usual manner, are adapted to enter the apertures 12 in the straps of the bolster and the corresponding apertures in the end portion of the bolster.
While preferably two locking-springs are employed for each standard, one at each side,
as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, a single spring may be used, as shown in Fig. 2, in which event a gage-plate 15 is secured to the side of the standard oppositethat at which a spring 13 is secured, the said gage plate when the standard is in position in the bolster being adapted for engagement with the upper portion of the said bolster. Under this construction itis obvious that the moment the standard is forced into position in' a bolster the latch or latches comprising the springs 13 and pins 14 will automatically lock themselves to the bolster and that by simply drawing out the springs 13, so that the pins 14 will be freed from the bolster and its straps, the
standardsmay be quickly and readily removed.
The device is exceedingly simple. It is durable andeconomic and may be successfully manipulated by any person of ordinary in telligence. V
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A standard for a bolster, provided with a spring-latch, secured at its upper end to the standard and provided at its lower free end with a pin adapted to enter an opening in the side of the bolster to which the standard is applied, for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with a bolster having an aperture produced in its sideportion, of a standard adapted to vertically enter the said bolster, and a spring attached to the said standard, the free end of which spring is pro vided with a pin :adaptedto enter the said side portion of the'bolster, for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with a bolster provided with a strap at its end, the strap being provided With an aperture in registry With a horizontal opening made in the bolster, of a standard, the lower end of which is introduced into the said bolster, and a spring-latch secured to the standard, the said latch being provided with a pin at its free end, adapted to enter the aperture in the strap of the b01- sterand the registering opening in the bolster, for the purpose set forth.
4E. The combination, with a bolster provided with a strap at its end and openings in the strap registering with openings horizontally made in the bolster, of astandard adapted to enter the bolster, the standard when JASPER N. SMITH.
