FLETCHER n. FIELDER, OF GREENWOOD, MISSISSIPPI.
BASKET-G RATE.
SPEGIFIOATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 628,402, dated July fl, 1899.
Application filed July 26,1898. Serial No. 686,961. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FLETCHER H. FIELDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenwood, in the county of Lefiore and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Basket- Grates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fireplace-grates, and particularly to a basket-grate.
The object of the invention is to providea new and improved grate-frame and a basketgrate of novel and peculiar construction adapted to slide and turn in said frame.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my grate. Fig. 2 is a section on the line mm, Fig. 1, with the basket turned.
The same numeral references denote the same parts throughout both figures of the drawings.
The grate-frame consists of top bars 1, a bottom bar 2, end fingers 3, which connect the top and bottom bars together, and hooks Al, adapted to engage suitable pins or projections in the fireplace to fix said frame. Each end finger 3 has an upper slot 5, a lower notch or trunnion bearing 6, and a lip '7, projecting over and beyond the said notch to form a reduced entrance or passage-wayinto the notch.
The movable basket-grate consists of a top bar 8, having shoulders 9, ends 10, projecting from the shoulders to engage the slots 5, a bottom bar 11, a series of fingers 12, connecting the bars 8 and 11, and end fingers 13, having outwardly-projecting trunnions 14 to engage the notches 6 and hold the basket free within the frame. A lever 15, having a slot 15, is pivoted to one of the fingers 12 at 16 and to one of the frame-fingers 3 by a pin 17 through said slot, so that the lever may be moved transversely to slide the basket back and forth and pulled forward to throw the upper part of the basket inward, so as to deposit the contents of the basket in the rear of the fireplace. The lug 18 forms a rest for the lever 15.
' It will be observed that the basket is free to be moved in the trunnion-notches and in the frame-slots to shake the fire and that the from the said notches when the basket is turned to deposit its contents.
It is obvious that the grate may be made in various sizes and with more or fewer fingers, as desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the grate-frame comprising transverse top bars, a transverse bottom bar, end fingers having upper slots and lower notches, and forming the only connection between the bottom and top bars, of the basket comprising a top bar having ends engaging said slots, a bottom bar, a series of fingers connecting these two bars, a trunnion extending outwardly from the end fingers of the series through the said notches, and a lever pivoted to the basket and to the frame for sliding and turning the basket in the frame, as set forth.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
FLETCHER H. FIELDER.
