GEORGE N. WALKER, OF TAMA, IOWA.
GRATE-BARAND SHAKER ATTACHMENT FOR FURNACES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 476,584, dated June '7, 1892.
Application filed Jiily 31, 1891.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, GEORGE \V. \VALKER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Taina, in the county of Tania and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grate Bars and Shaker Attachments for Furnaces, of which the following is a specification, reference be ing had therein to .the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to certain improvements in fire-grates for furnaces, &c.; and it consists of the detailed construction and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved grate-bar and shaker attaehm ent for furnaces. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of one of the grate-bars. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line a: a: of 1. Fig. 1 is a front view of the invention. Fig. 5 is a detailed sectional view taken on a straight line through the parts B (Z 12 g. Fig. 6 isa cross-section taken on the line 5 z of Fig. 1, and Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section taken on the line Y Y of Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawings, A A represent the series of grate-bars having their rear ends provided with circular or disk-like enlargements (L, themselves provided in their upper surfaces with recesses, the longitudinal portions of said bars having their upper surfaces provided with grooves, these enlargements permitting the bars to stand the requisite intervals apart. These bars taper toward their forward ends and have their disklike or circular rear ends provided with pendent pivot-pins or pi ntles Z), engaging coincident sockets Z') in the upper end of the rear cross-piece c in the stove orfurnace base, thus pivoting or hinging said bars at said ends.
The forward or tapering ends of the bars A rest on the front cross piece or bar din the stove or furnace base and are adapted foren- Serial No. 401,266. (No model.)
gagement with the teeth of the notched or toothed sliding bar B, resting upon the bar d and having its-ends guided in apertures in side plates of said stoves or furnace base, while depending from the forward edge of the sliding bar 13 is a flange b extending forward between and limited in its movement by stops or projections e on the forward edge of the bar cl. The flan e 17 has an aperture f, adapted to receive the bar or lever g for actuating the slide or bar B, which in turn shakes or vibrates the grate-bars. This aperture also registers or coincides with a corresponding aperture f in a pendent lug or projection g on the inner edge of the bar (1, adapted to receive the inner end of the bar or lever g to provide for holding the slide or bar B stationarily and accordingly prevent the accidental movement by the weight or pressure of the contents of the combustion-chamberof the grate-bars.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim- 1. The fire-gratehaving the sliding notched or toothed bar, the pivoted or hinged bars whose free ends rest within the notches of said sliding bar, and means for actuating said sliding bar, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a fire-grate, of the pivoted or hinged bars and the toothed or notched sliding bar having at its forward edge a flange provided with a lever-receiving aperture registering with a corresponding aperture in a lug depending from the front support of said pivoted or hinged bars, said latter bars having their free ends resting within the notches of said toothed or notched bar, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereofI atiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE NV. TVALKER.
Witnesses:
A. W. GUERNSEY, W. A. SHARPE.
