GUSTAVO BACCI AND LEOPOLD B. PISOOPO, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
CANDLE-EXTINGUISHER.
SEIdCiIFllKiATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 628,381, dated July 4, 1899. Application filed Debelhbfilll, 1898. Serial No. 699,237. on model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that We, GUSTAVO BACCI, a subject of the King of Italy, and LEOPOLD B. PISCOPO, a citizen of the United States, both residing at the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Candle-Extinguisher, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide an extinguisher for candles which when employed will not in any manner crush or disturb the wick or cause the flame to deviate from its natural vertical position.
A further object of the invention is to so construct the candle-extinguisher that a flame from a candle may be extinguished without bringing said extinguisher close to the wick of the candle. Y
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, which represents a longitudinal vertical section through the improved device.
A represents a lamp provided with a suitable burner 10. The lamp preferably employed is one that is adapted to burn alcohol and is provided with a chimney B, constructed of metal or other material not liable to breakage. The chimney B is also made tapering, being narrowest at the top, and the top' portion of said chimney is curved or deflected. The chimney B may be detachably connected with the burner of the lamp in any suitable or approved manner. Usually, however, the chimney has a hinge connection with the burner and is held in an upright position by means of a latch 11, of any suitable construction, located at its base and arranged for engagement with a suitable portion of the burner. V v
In order that the chimney may be convenientlyhandled, it is provided with a coating or casing 12, of asbestos or other non-heatconducting material.
The action of the candle-extinguisher is as follows: The flame from the burner 10 producesan upward current of air in the chimney B, and the products of combustion, mixed phere highly charged with carbonic-acid gas,
which is antagonistic to combustion and smothers the flame at once, extinguishing said flame without blowing it about or causing it to flicker and without causing the wick to be deflected from its normal position. The said .wick is thus allowed to remain upright and in convenient position for relighting.
The ordinary extinguisher employed for extinguishing the flames of candles, especially those that are located upon an altar, presses the wick to a greater or less extent upon the body of the candle during the extinguishing process, and ofttimes the candles are displaced before being extinguished and the draperies on the altar become ignited or dam-- aged.
e are aware that extinguishers have been heretofore constructed with an air-conducting tube connected with a bulb; but when such extinguishers are employed before a flame is extinguished it is made to violently deviate from a perpendicular position and is more or less unsafe, whereas in the device herein described the carbonic-acid gas immediately extinguishes the flame without blowing it out, and, further, the device need not be brought in contact with the wick.
In the drawingthe dotted line represents the open position of the chimney. understood that the lamp A may be attached to a rod or a stick 13 in any suitable or approved manner, enabling the device to be employed to extinguish candles no matter at what elevation the flame may be.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. An extinguishing device for altar-candles or the like, consisting of a lamp provided with a burner, a long, narrow chimney secured to It will be the lamp over the burner, the said chimney tapering gradually fromits lower end toward the top and being deflected laterally at its upper end, and a stick upon which the lamp and its chimney are supported whereby they may be carried to candles otherwise inaccessible, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. An extinguishing device for altar-candles or the like consisting of a lamp provided with a burner, a stick upon the top of which said lamp is secured whereby the lamp may be carried to remotely-situated candles, a chimney secured on the lamp, the said chimney taper- GUSTAVO BAOOI.
