STO RAG E-PACKAG E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 628,159, dated July 4, 1899.
Application filed February 11, 1899. LNo. 705,271. (No model.) i
To aZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MOSES FALK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the countyof New York and State of New York, have invented certain new'and useful Improvements in Storage- Packages, of which the following is a specification,
This invention relates to storage-packages comprising a receptacle having a sealed top and a removable cover provided with a cutting-tool adapted by the movement of the .cover to cut open the sealed top. Such stor age packages or receptacles have been made in the shape of a round can and a round cover,
which by a circular movement, and atthe open.
This invention consists of an improved construction in this line of devices constructed and arranged as hereinafter set forth in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sealed can or receptacle and its cover wit-h cutting-tool, the cover being detached, all constructed as hereinafter more particularly set forth. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the sealed can constructed in accordance with this invention, showing the cover partly removed. Fig. 3-is a detailed view, in vertical section, showing the connection of the cover with the can and the relation of the cutting-tool to the sealed cover. Fig. 4 is a detailed view, in vertical section, showing a modification of the connection of the cover with the can and illustrating the method of severing the sealed cover. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modification .of the sealed can, illustrating the method of severing the sealed top. 1
This invention has particular reference to angular sealed cansas, for example, the rectangularcanl (seen in Fig. 1 of the drawings)-'made of tin or of similar material. 2 indicates the sealed top of the can. This can is provided with a sliding cover 3. The cover 3 and the top of the can are constructed in any suitable manner, so that the cover may on two opposite sides with a depending flange 4, having at its bottom an inturned edge 5, and the can 1, adjacent to its top, is .formed with a suitable bead 6, with which the inturned edge 5 of the flange 4: is adapted to have a sliding engagement. The ends of the cover 3 are without any flange, thereby permitting the cover 3 to be slid on and off of the top of the can 1 in either direction. The ends of the cover 3 may be provided with flexible lips 7 or other suitable projection adapted to be bent down and there-by prevent the cover 3 from being suddenly moved from the top of the can. When it is desired to move the cover, the lips '7 may be bent up. The cover 3 is provided at one end and at one sidethereof with a suitable tool for cutting the sealed cover 2.. As'here shown, the cutting-tool 8 may consist of a strip of steel having its rear portion 8 duly secured to the sealed cover 2 by'being passed through or interwoven with strips 9 of the sealed cover 2, the rear end 9 of the cutting-tool extending under the sealed cover 2. The forward part 10 of the cuttingtool is elevated at an angle to the top of the box, and the cutting portion 11 thereof consists of a downwardly-projecting V-shaped part having a cutting edge adapted to cut the sealed cover 2. In the normal-position of the cutting-tool the V-shaped projection 11 extends through the opening of the perforation 12 in the top of the cover 3 and rests upon or is in close proximity to the sealed cover 2.
When it'is desired to sever the sealed cover 2, the cutting-tool 8 is pressed down by the finger, as shown in Fig. 4, to puncture the sealed cover 2, and in that position the cover 3 is drawn along the top of the can, the V- shaped projection 11 cutting a slit in one side of the sealed cover 2. The cover 3 is then drawn off of the top of the can 1 and placed crosswise thereto in order thatthe top of the can may have a sliding engagement with the top of the can 1 in a transverse position to.
is represented by drawing the cover 3 trans-' versely across the top of the sealed can 1.,
In this way, the cover 3 being drawn across the top of the boX from end to end and transversely, the cutting-tool is caused tocut the sides of the sealed cover 2. It may be stated that the flanges at of the cover 3 in engagement with the beads G serve to guide the cutting-tool straight across the sealed cover 2. \Vhile one particular form of engagement of the cover 3 .with the sides of the can 1 is shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 5, it is obvious that the can 1 may be provided with a groove 13 and the flange 4 of the cover with the bead 14:.
The construction so far set forth has shown the invention as applied to a square can. The invention may, however, be applied to oblong rectangular cans, as shown in Fig. 5, in which 7 an oblong rectangular can 15 is provided with movement of the cover sliding over the side edges of the top of the can.
It will be observed that the covers 3 and 16 are provided with raised edges 20, which overlie raised edges 21 of the top of the can, therebyprotecting the cutting-tool from being suddenly pressed down against the sealed cover by another can placed on top of the can.
Having described this invention, I claim 1. A storage-package, consisting of a rectangular receptacle having a sealed top, and means, adjacent to the top of said receptacle on every side thereof for the sliding engagement of a removable cover, in combination with a slidable, removable cover, adapted to have a sliding engagement with the top of the can in every direction transversely thereto, and over the top thereof, said cover being provided with a cutting-tool adapted toengage with, and cut the sealed cover by the movement of the sliding cover across the top ofthe receptacle.
2. A storage-package, consisting of asealed receptacle, in combination with a removable sliding cover, having a cutting-tool, adapted to be pressed into engagement with and cut the top of the sealed receptable by the movement of the sliding cover across the top of the receptacle, the cover being constructed to have a sliding engagement with the top of the receptacle on every side of the latter, whereby the cover may be slid transversely across the top of the receptacle in every direction, and the receptacle cut open. I
3. A storage-package consisting of a rectangular box having a sealed cover and a bead on each side thereof adjacent to its top in combination with a sliding cover having flanges on two opposite sides adapted to engage the beads on two opposite sides of the box, and a cutting-tool mounted on a sliding cover adapted to be pushed into engagement with the sealed cover of the box.
Signed at the city, county, and State of New York this 3d day of February, A. D. 1899. MOSES FALK. Witnesses:
