UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SARAH S. HOWARTI-I,
OF NEW YORK, N. 'Y.
BICYCLE ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 627,693, dated June 27, 1899. I
Application filed January 30, 1899. Serial No. 703,794. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SARAH S. HOWARTH, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of New York, (Brooklyn,) county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bi-' cycle Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part there-.
of, in which similar letters and numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to improvements in bicycle attachments. p
Bicycle-riders are frequently attacked and injured by vicious dogs while traveling over country roads; and this invention has for its object to supply an efficient and easily-operated means for repelling dogs of this class.
The device is simple in construction, light in weight, and inexpensive, and it is adapted for attachment to any common foi'mof bicycle-frame.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claim. In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a bicycle having my improved appliance attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the appliance detached, and Fig. 3 is a detail sectional elevation ofa portion of the device. 7
In the practice of my invention I employ a plurality of.boxes A, adapted to contain snuff, pepper, or other pulverized material of a class calculated to repel the advances of a dog. These said boxes are secured to suitable parts of the bicycle-frame by means of clamps B, of any adapted construction, which are connected thereto. Each of these said boxes is provided with a removable lid a and an airinlet tube a, and these said inlet-tubes communicate with flexible tubing 0, which leads to an ordinary compressible. bulb D for the purpose of supplying air-pressure to the boxes. Each box is supplied with a series of perforations a for outlet of pepper or other powder number of boxes may be employed, and in all cases the flexible tubes 0 leading therefrom communicate with a common tube C, which is led from the compressible bulb D. The bulb D is fastened to the handle-bar by means of a strap (1; but I do not confine myself to any specific means for fastening nor to any particular location upon the bicycle-frame, as the flexible air-supplying tubes may readily be led to any part of the machine.
In the operation and use of the device when a dog attacks a rider it is simply necessary to compress the bulb, which forces the pepper contained-within the boxes out through the perforated portions thereof by means of airpressure, and it is obvious that a sprinkling of red pepper or other similar substance will immediately cause a dog to desist from further attack.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a bicycle attachment for repelling the attacks of dogs, the combination of a perforated box containing pepper or other substance, and a flexible tube and a compressible bulb, and means for attaching the device to the frame of a bicycle, substantially 'as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 26th day of J anuary, 1899.
SARAH S. HOWARTH.
