SAMUEL D. FREET, OF MCCIUTCHENVILL'E, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 62,624, dated ilareh 5, 1867.
IMPROVED INSTRUMENT FOR PARING TEE HOOES OF HORSES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL D. FREET, of MeCutehenville, in the eounty of Wyandott, and State of Ohio, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Instruments for Pai-ing IIorses Hoofs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe construction and operation of the same, referenrn being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 represents a side View of the instrument.
Figure 2 represents a front view thereof; and
Figure 3 represents an edge view.
Similar letters of reference, where they occur in the separate figures, denote like parts of the instrument in all the drawings. l
My invention consists in an instrument operated somewhat like spring-nippers, and made adjustable so as to be Controlled and operated with one hand, Whilst the hoofl of the horse is/held by the other hand.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings. i
The two legs A B, of the paring instrument, are pivotcd together at a, and held apart by a spring, The' prolongation of the limb or leg A, beyond the pivot or hinged point a, is curved around, as seen in fig. 1, and clamps a paring-knife, e', at its forward end by means of a plate, d, and screws e. The other limb or leg B is less curved and projects beyond the cutter in the limb A, and has upon its side or face, opposite to the cutter, a creased anvilblocl ,f, against which the cutter works. Beyond' the anvil-block the projected `limb forms a guid' and support against the hoof, for guidingand directing the paring by. That the edge of the cutter c may not be brought up against the anvil so hard as to turn or impair its cutting edge, a set-screw, g, is passed through the jaw of the limb B, and its point will come in Contact with thejaw of the other limb A just before said edge is brought in Contact with the anvil-block, though its edge may have passed into Athe crease or groove in said block. That the legs or limbs A B may not be spread so far apart by the spring b as to prevent the user from grasping both in one hand, an adjustable gauge-pieee z is applied to the back of the limb or leg B, and coming against the jaw of the other limb A, prevents the two from spreading an'y farther. The instrument may, however, be used and worked by both hands, and then the spread of the limbs may not be restrained so much.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as a new article of manufacture, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An instrument for paring horses hoofs, constructed, arranged, adjusted, and made to operate as herein set forth and explained.
SAMUEL D. FREET.
