UNITED STATES PATENT OFFI E.
SAMUEL L. BARNDOLLAR, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
WASHBOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 626,044, dated May 30, 1899.
Application filed November 17, 1898. Serial No. 696,722. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LSAMUEL LBAENDOLLAR, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wash boards, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in washboards.
My invention particularly relates to construct-in g a washboard having a rubbin g-looard of any suitable material, a soap-holding receptacle arranged above the rubbing-board, and a back having continuous vertical grooves arranged on its inner face to allow of the drying and to prevent the warping or bulging of the same. I I
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of this character with a back having vertical grooves arranged on its inner face to prevent the Warping or bulging thereof, and, further, to use the ends of the back as a means for securing the lower portion of the rubbing-board in position.
My invention finally consists of the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully and specifically described,
and particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, whereinlike numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views thereof, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the upper portion of my improved washboard. Fig. 2 is an inverted perspective view of the upper portion of my improved washboard. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line m 00, Fig. 1. Fig. l is a perspective view of a portion of the upper brace-rod. Fig. 5 is a perspective View of my improved back, showing the vertical grooves and the upper end out.
away, formingthetenon. Fig.6isaninverted perspective view of my improved back, showing the cut-away portion of the upper end forming the tenon, as well as the smaller projecting portions at each corner. Fig. 7 isa perspective'view of one of the standards or 'ing'a support therefor.
gated and is adapted to be secured in the groove 4, formed in the lower brace-rod 3. The upper brace-rod 6 is formed of an elongated strip of suitable material, having a ridge 7, on its inner face, the ridge being of such shape as to receive one of the corrugated portions of the rubbing-board. The upper end of the rubbing-board is mounted on the shonlder 8 and is secured in position by means of the drain-board 9. The opposite end of the drain-board is secured to the top 10 of the washboard.
Arranged in the upper portion of the wash board andv directly above the drain-board is the soap-holdin g receptacle, which consists of a piece of wire mesh or any other suitable material 11, having the upper and lower portions thereof bent at right angles, as at 12,
forming sides for the receptacle and adapted to retain the soap therein when not in use, and the ends bent downwardly, as at 13, form- The soap-receptacle may be secured in position by any desirable means.
14 indicates my improved back, which is provided with vertical grooves '15 on its inner face and a cut-away portion at its top and bottom, as at 16, on its'outer face, thereby forming the tenons 17, the lower one being inserted in the groove formed in the lowerbrace, there- ,by supporting the lower portion of the rubbing-board in position, while the upper tenon is adapted to be secured on the shoulder 8, formed on the inner face of the upper bracerod. Thesides of the back arecut away, as
at 18, which, in conjunction with the grooves and the smaller port-ions 19 of the upper and lower corners of the board, will prevent the bulging, warping, &c., of the back when wet by allowing the expansion thereof. It will also be observed that owing to the arrangem ent of the back and rubbing-board a passage for the air is formed, which will allow of the back of the rubbing-board and inner face of the back to dry out quickly and prevent the same from becoming foul.
It will be readily observed that owing to the construction of my improved back the outer face thereof can be used entirely for advertising purposes.
It is thought that the setting up of my improved washboard and its many advantages over the washboards heretofore in use will be apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction witlr out departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a washboard a back having grooves formed on its inner face, tenons formed on its upper and lower ends and having its sides cut away to almost the extreme ends there of, thereby forming a small projecting portion which in connection with the grooves will allow for the expansion of the back without bulging, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a washboard a pair of standards or supports, a rubbing-board suitably secured thereto, a drain-board, a soap-holding receptacle arranged above the drain-board and a back having vertical grooves formed on its inner face and having its sides cut away to almost the extreme ends thereby forming a small projecting portion which in connection with the grooves will allow for the expansion of the back without bulging, substantially as shown and described.
3. In awashboard asoap-holdingreceptacle formed of a suitable piece of material having a portion of its upper and lower ends bent at right angles forming the sides and a portion of the ends of this material bent downwardly forming supports therefor, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
