UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY HARMAN SCHEPERS, OF SANDON, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 62 5,469, dated May 23, 1899.
Application filed February 17, 1899. Serial No. 705,781. (No model.)
T0 all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY HARMAN SCHE- PERS, of Sanden, in the Province of British Columbia, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammer Hand-Slings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,in which- Figure l is a View showing my hammersling as in use by a miner in drilling; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the hammersling as out of use, the hammer being shown in dotted lines in position in the sling.
My invention relates to a hammer handsling for drillers use in mining, especially for striking a drill upwardly.
My invention has for its object to partially or at intervals transfer the weight of the hammer from the handle grasped by the hand to the wrist or forearm by a sling connecting the head of the hammer and the Wrist of the user and a clutch connecting the handle of the hammer to the sling, so that the user can swing the hammer to strike the drill without.
the laborious eort of continually grasping the handle of the hammer.
My invention consists of a harness embracing the hammer-head and attached to a clutch to grip the handle of the hammer, said clutch connected by a buckle and strap to a strap forming the loop to receive the wrist of the user, whereby the hammer canbe partly swung or momentarily without grasping the handle, thereby relieving the hand.
A is a U-shaped metal clutch suited to llt and grip the handle B of the hammer-head C. D is a leather strap having the ends connected to said clutch by rivets or otherwise to form a loop to receive the head of the hammer.
B is a leather strap connecting a buckle F to the clutch, said strap riveted to the clutch or otherwise fastened thereto.
G is a leather strap, one end secured to its attachment and forming a loop to fit loosely on the wrist of the user, and the other end of said strap passes through the buckle to shorten or lengthen the loop to suit diifereut lengths of adjustment by drawing the strap more or less through the buckle.
I claim as my invention- A hammer hand-sling for retaining a hammer and relieving the hand at intervals from grasping the handle while striking an upward blow, comprisinga U-shaped clutch to it the hammer-handle, a strap having the ends fastened to said clutch and forming'a loop to receive the head of the hammer, a buckle connected to said clutch, and a strap passing through said buckle and forming a loop to fit on the wrist of the user, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two Witnesses.
HENRY HARMAN SCHEPERS.
