UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAV W ITT, OF ERFUR'I, GERMANY.
NEWSPAPER OR LIKE HCLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 625,231, dated May 16, 1899.
Application filed January '7, 1899. Serial No. 701,497. (No model.)
To all whom it quay concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAV WITT,,sanitaryinspector, a subject of the King of Prussia, Emperor of Germany, residing at Erfurt, in the Kingdom of Prussia and German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Newspaper or Like Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to newspaper and like holders and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a'plan. Fig. 2 shows the holder open. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 1 1, Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a detail view.
One of the clamp members 1 is provided at its lower end with a handle 2 and with lateral spring-hinges 3, connecting it to the upper clamp member 4.
The lower clamp member 1 is beveled 0E along one side edge, as shown at 1, Fig. 3, and the springs attached to said member are each provided with an upwardly-bentportion 3, which terminate in pintle-bearings for the two hinge members. The upwardly-bent portions 3 of the lower hinge members normally lie away from and out of contact with the said beveled-off side 1; but these parts of the springs are sufficiently elastic orspringy to enable the upper clamp member 4 to be shifted laterally, so as to cause a disengagement of the locking devices, as will hereinafter appear.
Pins 5 on the lower member 1 are formed with teeth on their sides and chamfered and pointed at the top for the purpose of enabling them easily to pass through the paper to be secured. l
The upper member 4 has secured to one edge thereof metal plates 6, and adjacent to each plate the said member 4 is provided with a facing hole or recess 7 to receive the pins 5 of the lower member 1 when the two members are closed, and thesaid plates are each provided with a tooth shaped projection adapted to engage with the teeth of the pins 5, as clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
Both members 1 and 4 are provided on their inner surface with longitudinal recesses or grooves S and 9, whereby it is possible to secure the papers firmly by means of the outer edge of the clamp or holder.
hen the holder is to be used, it is first opened and the edge of the paper to be se cured is pressed on the points of the pins 5. Then the other member 4 is firmly pressed against the lower member 1, whereby the pins 5 penetrate into the holes 7 and these teeth engage with the teeth of the metallic plates 6, whereby both jaws are held fast and any falling out of the papers is completely prevented.
IVhen it is desired to add new papers or toremove old ones, it is suffioient to exercise a lateral pressure against the center of the upper member 4 in the right-hand direction, as
shown by the arrow 11, Fig. 3, in order to dis engage the teeth, whereupon the holder can be opened.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is-- 1. A paper or like holder, comprising two members adapted to be folded one upon the other, yielding hinges connecting said members at one side, so as to enable one member to be shifted laterally with respect to the other member, toothed pins on one of said members, and fixed lock-plates onthe opposite member, with which said pins engage to hold the two members in locked engagement, said lock-plates being disengaged from the toothed pins by the lateral shifting of one of the members, substantially as described.
3. A paper or like holder comprising two clamping members adapted to be folded one upon the other, yielding hinges connecting said members at one side, so as to enable one member to be shifted laterally with respect to the other member, fixed look-plates car ried by the shiftable member on that side opposite the said hinges and an opening adja cent to each of said plates, and toothed pins on the opposite member, arranged to pass into said openings and engage with the lockplates, said lock-plates being disengaged from the toothed pins by the lateral shifting of the said shiftable member.
4:. A paper or like holder comprising two clamping members adapted to be folded one upon the other, and one of said members being provided with a beveled side edge, hinges connecting said clamping members adjacent to said beveled edge, one part of each hinge being movable to and from the said beveled edge of the clamping member to enable one member to be shifted laterally with respect to the opposite member, and suitable locking means carried by the said clamping members respectively, and disengaged by the lateral shifting of one of the members, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set myhand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
v GUSTAV WITT.
