TAN K-BOTTOM DISCHARGE-DOOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 624,958, dated May 16, 1899.
Application filed November 26,1897. Serial No. 659,752. (Nomodel-J T0 to 1.0700711 it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEBBEUS H. MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Tank-Bottom Discharge- Doors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to settling, and settling or leaching tanks or vats designed to be used in case of settling, either liquid pulp or sands or pulverized ores, then discharging the same after leaching into other tanks, or, on the other hand, in the case of settling and then immediately leaching the sands or pulverized ores in the same tanks, and the settling of the sands or pulverized ores from liquid pulp when wet crushing has been employed, having been effected in settling-tanks, and it is designed to be used in the treatment of gold and silver ores in cases where leaching processes by means of solutions of cyanid of potassium or otherwise are employed, and particularly to discharge-doors for such tanks or vats; and some of the objects of the invention are to provide a simple, cheap, and effective apparatus of this character by means of which the doors may be quickly opened and the contents of the tank discharged therefrom, and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section or portion of a vat, showing the funnel and discharge-door therefor; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 00 0c of Fig. 1.
Similar characters of reference designate like parts throughout both views.
Referring to the drawings, the reference character 1 designates a portion of the base or bottom of a settling or settling and leaching tank or vat provided with an opening in which is secured a casting or sleeve 2, having an upper horizontal rim or flange 3, which rests upon the base 1 of the tank or vat and supports the casting, and encircling a lower portion of thecasting 2 upon the under side of the bottom 1 of the tank or vat is a ring 4, of any suitable material, and passing through the rim 3 of the casting 2 and the ring 4 are a plurality of bolts or smaller devices 5, adapted to retain such parts in position, and the interior surface of the casting 2 is preferably smoothed or pla nished, and, if desired, the casting may be slightly flared or frusto conical in form, but is preferably ofthe construction herein shown.
Located within the vatabove the casting 2 is a funnel or similar device 6, preferablypro vided with a reinforcing-band 7, which may 7 be either flat or convex in form, and may be secured in position by rivets or bolts, and coin nected to the lower end of funnel 6 by means of rivets or bolts 8,0r in any other desired manner, is a base 9,provided with an exterior annular shoulder or offset 11, beyond which lower extremity 12 of the funnel 6 preferably projects, and between the base and the depending extremity 12 of the funnel is secured a gasket or packing-ring 13, of any suitable material, adapted to rest upon the rim of the casting 2 and support'the funnel 6. I also provide a bar or plate 14, to oneside of which is bolted or otherwise secured a brace or clamp 15, and passing through the plate 14 and the brace or clamp 15 is a screw 16, provided with integral collar or nut 17, adapted to operate between the bar or plate 14 and the brace or clamp 15, and the free end of the screw 16 engages a screw-threaded aperture in the spider or diaphragm 10 of the base 9. The lower end of the screw 16 is preferably provided with ahand-wheel or handle 18, of any preferred construction, adapted to rotate the screw.
The operation of the apparatus will be read ily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanyin g drawings and the following explanation thereof.
The funnel 6 is first placed in position upon the casting 2 and the bar or plate 14: is pressed upward against the bottom of the casting 2 and screw 16 is rotated until the base 9 is drawn downwardly upon the upper rim of the casting, so that the water-tight joint is produced and the escape of the liquid within the tank is prevented, and when it is desired to remove the funnel and open the dischargedoor it is only necessary to rotate the screw 16 in the reverse direction until the same is disengaged from the base 9 and elevate the funnel from above by means of a derrick.
The operation of removing the funnel 6 when the screw 16 has been disengaged therefrom will not be difficult, owing to the construction of the casting 2 and the base 9, as it will be observed that the walls of the casting 2 are proximately vertical and that the base 9 extends into the casting 2 onlya short distance and that there is an annular space between the casting and the base to avoid friction or adhesion between the parts.
I do not desire to confine myself to the specific construction, combination, and arrangement of parts herein shown and described, and I therefore reserve the right to make all said changes in and modifications of the same as fairly come within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A discharge apparatus for tanks provided with a casting having a depending rim or edge, a funnel adapted to partially enter said casting and a plate or bar adapted to bear against said depending rim or edge having engagement with said funnel to retain the latter in position.
2. A discharge apparatus for tanks provided with a casting having a depending edge or rim, a funnel removably secured therein and a straight plate or bar provided with means to detachably engage said funnel and force said plate or bar against said edge or rim.
3. A discharge apparatus for tanks provided with a ring-casting adapted to be secured in the bottom of the tank, a funnel above the casting having a base adapted to enter the casting, aplate or bar below the casting and a screw carried by said plate or bar, adapted to engage the base, and retain the funnel in position.
4. A discharge apparatus for tanks consisting of a ring-casting having a horizontal rim adapted to rest upon the bottom of the tank, a ring encircling the lower portion of the casting below the tank, means for securing the rim and ring in position, a funnel above the casting, a base connected to the funnel, and a bar or plate adapted to bear against the casting and retain the base in position within the casting.
5. A discharge apparatus for tanks consisting of a casting secured in the bottom of the tank, a ring below the tank around the casting, and means for securing the rim and ring in position, a funnel above the casting, a base connected with the lower end of the funnel and provided with an annular offset or shoulder, a packing ring within the offset, and adapted to rest upon the rim of the casting, a plate or bar bearing against the rim of the casting, a nut-carrying screw in the plate or bar adapted to engage the base and draw the same within the casting, a brace or clamp connected to the plate or bar, above the nut on the screw and means for rotating the screw.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
