Be it known that 1, JOHN LIMING, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Hydraulic Air-Compressors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of certain improvements in the hydraulic air-compressor for which I obtained Letters Patent No. 569,929, dated October 20, 1896, the objects of my present improvements being to prevent waste of water and to insure the tighter closing of the valve which governs the outflow of water from the tank. These objects I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being lower portion of my improved air-compressor,

order to permit of the escape of water from the tank. The novel feature of this part of my invention consists in the disposition of that arm of the lever 6 which carries the weight 8. In the machine of the former patent this arm formed a rearward continuation of the lever, and the power of the weight was constantly exerted to open the valve, whereas in the present form of the compressor the l arm projects upwardly from the lever at a point above the fulcrum of the latter, so that when the valve 5 is closed the preponderance of the weight 8 will be on the 'valve side of the lever-fulcrum, and will hence tend to hold said valve closed against its seat, as shown in Fig. 1, while when the lever is operated so as to raise the valve the preponderance of the weight 8 will be exerted on the opposite side of the fulcrum and will hence aid in holding the valve open, as shown in Fig. 2, the action of the water-loaded ball 7 being the same as before. In the present machine also I have provided the water-inlet pipe 2 with a valve 12, which may be an ordinary plug-valve, which when the plug is in the position shown in Fig. 1 permits flow of water through the pipe 2 and into the tank, but when said plug hasbeen turned to the position shown in Fig. 2 cuts oif the flow of water through the pipe,
Secured to the plug of the valve is a lever 13, one arm of which carries a'counterweight 14:, the other arm being provided with a cup or receptacle 15, so disposed as to receive the discharge from the waste-pipe 3 of the tank, this cup having in the bottom a drainageopening 16. The counterweight let is such that when the cup 15 is empty the influence of said weight on the lever 13 will move the valve-plug to the open position, as shown in Fig. 1, but when the cup 15 is filled with water its influence will be greater than that of the counterweight 14, and consequently the valve-plug will be moved to the closed position, as shown in Fig. 2. Moreover, the action is direct and but few parts are employed, thereby insuring simplicity of operation and cheapness of construction.
It is not necessary to the proper carrying out of my invention that the valve-lever 13 should have a cup or like receptacle for receiving the discharge from the waste-pipe 3, as a simple plate upon which said flow of waste water impinges may be sufficient in some cases to effect the desired operation of the valve of the inlet-pipe, such plate being shown, for instance, at 15 in Fig. 3, and instead of employing a weighted lever for operating the inlet-valve said lever may be acted upon by a spring tending to maintain the valve normally in the open position, the tension of this spring being overcome by the action upon the lever of the water escaping from the tank.
When the lever carries a plate instead of a cup, I find it advisable to confine the volume of water flowing from the waste-pipe so as to concentrate the action of the same upon the plate. Thus, as shown in Fig. 3, the wastepipe 3 has a depending pipe 3, surrounding the plate 15, and slotted at one side for the reception and movement of the lever 13.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the tank, its discharge-valve and float-valve lever, the latter having an upwardly-projecting arm with weight thereon, said arm being so disposed that when the valve is closed the power of the weight will be exerted to keep it closed, and when the valve is raised the power of the weight will be exerted to keep it raised, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the compressiontank of a hydraulic air-compressor, a valved water-inlet pipe, a'valved escape-pipe, a lever acting upon the valve of the inlet-pipe, and means whereby the iiow'of water from the escape-pipe is caused to movesaid lever so as to close said inlet-valve, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of the compressiontank of a hydraulic air-compressor, a valved Water-inlet pipe, a valved water-escape pipe, a'weighted lever connected directly to the inlet-valve, and means whereby the flow of water from the escape-pipe is caused to act upon said lever so as to close said inlet-valve, substantially as specified.
4. The combination .of the compressiontank of a hydraulic air-compressor, a valved water-inlet pipe, a valved water-escape pipe, a lever acting upon the inlet-valve, a plate carried by said lever and adapted to receive the discharge from the waste-pipe, and a casing inclosing said plate but slot-ted for the reception and movement of the lever, substantiall y as specified.
