NlTED STATES JOSEPH L. CRISLER, OF ALERT, OKLAHOMA TERRITORY.
TAIL-GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 624,756, dated May 9, 1899.
Application filed June 18, 1897. Renewed November 9, 1898. Serial No. 695,990. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH L. OnIsLE'R, of
Alert, in the county of Kay and Territory of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tail-Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to tail-gates for wagons; and its object is to provide an improved form of tail-gate which may be operated from either side and which will swing to either side, as desired.
My invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings,-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a wagon equipped with my tail-gate, the latter being shown in closed position. Figz2 is a similar View, said gate being partially open; and Fig. 3 is a top plan view of my device.
The numeral 1 designates a wagon-body of any approved construction. The ends of the side-boards are preferably provided with guard-plates adapted to protect them from injury, said plates lapping entirely around said ends,as shown in Fig. 3. A tail-gate lis adapted to be placed at the end of said body and is provided withaplate 5 upon each end thereof to prevent wear and injury. This tail-gate is preferably adapted to fit between the sides of the body, although it may extend entirely across and fit against the ends, if preferred. A plate 6 is secured at each end of said gate, the same being provided with a bent portion 7, extending a short distance along the side of the body to hold the sides and prevent them from spreading apart. The plates 6, mounted on the ends of the tail-gate, are formed with hinge lugs or eyes adapted to receive a hingepintle 8. At the sides of the body are longitudinally-extending bars 13, passing through guides 12, mounted on the plates 2 adjacent to the end of the plate 6 when the tail-gate is in closed position. The rear ends of the bars 13 are formed with open hooks'adapted to be engaged with and disengaged from the hingepintles 8 and at their front ends with loops or eyes which are in engagement with cranks end, forming a complete hinge.
10, formed on the crank-levers 11, said cranklevers being mounted in bearings 9, adjustably mounted on the sides of the body, as best shown in Fig. 2. Byoperatin g the cranklever the bars 13 are moved back and forth to open and close the end-gate. hen the bars at either side are moved back, their hook ends are disengaged from the hinge-pintle 8 to release that end of the end-gate, the latter being then free to swing back, the plate 6 and the bars 13, with the pintle 8 at the opposite To facilitate the disengagement of the bars 13 from the hinge-pintle; the said bars are bent outward at or near their mid-length, so that when they are moved back their rear ends will move outward away from the hinge -pintle 8, when they become disengaged therefrom. When the crank-levers are turned back to close the gate, as represented in Fig. 1, they are engaged and held by spring-bolts 14:, mounted upon the sides of the body, as shown, accidental opening of the gate being thus prevented.
It will be understood that the crank-levers at both sides of the body may be operated. to release the gate at both ends, the latter being then adapted to be removed bodily.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The 'combinationwith a wagon-body, of a tail-gate provided at each end with one member of a hinge, longitudinally movable hookbars mounted upon the sides of the body and adapted to be engaged with and disengaged from the hinge members of the tail-gate, and means for moving said bars longitudinally, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination with a wagon-body, of a tail-gate provided at each end with one member of a hinge, longitudinally-movable bars mounted in guides on the sides of the wagon body, provided at their rear ends with hooks adapted to engage with and to be disengaged from the hinge membersof the tail-gate, and crank-levers fulcrumed on the sides of the wagon-body for positively moving and oper-' ating said bars to hold or release the gate.
3. The ,combinationwith a wagon-body, of a tail-gate, hinged pintles held upon said tailgate adjacent and parallel to the ends thereof, crank-levers held one upon each side of said wagon-body, and longitudinally-movable bars provided with hooked ends moving through guides attached to the sides of the body, and crank-levers also mounted upon of, adjustable bearings held upon both sides,
the body and adapted to move said bars longitudinally into and out of engagement with the hinged pintles on the tail-gate as shown and described.
' 4. The combination with a Wagon-body, of a tail-gate, hinged pintles held upon said tail gate adjacent and parallel to the ends thereof said wagon-body, a crank-lever carried in said bearings, guides held upon both sides of said wagon-body adjacent to the rods upon the tail-gate when said tail-gate is closed, bent longitudinally-movable bars provided with hooks extending through said guides, and means to'secure said crank-lever when said tail-gate is in closed position, substantially as described.
.the end of said lever when said gate is in position, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscrib- I ing witnesses.
