IMPROVEMENT IIN END-GATES FOR WAGONS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,943, dated May 2l, 1872.

Beit known that I, CHARLES W. FALLICK,

of Beaver Falls, Beaver county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in End-Gates for Wagons, of which the following is a full description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in whichened, readily unfastenin g, and speedily opened, t and Without difficulty altogether removed from the wagon.

H represents the mainportion of the endgates, to the heels of which are secured suitably the plates L bearingv the hinge-eyes E, which rest upon the hinge-supports F, that are rmly secured in the side of the wagonbed. The upper hinges are secured by screwplugs a, which being withdrawn the gates may be raised and lifted oft' when not required. The screw-plugs are attached to a chain fastenedA to the side of the wagon-bed to prevent loss. The plates b, d, f, and m are rmly secured upon the main portions of the gates, as shown. Through the plate b the downwardlyturned hooks c are fastened, and through the plates d and m the upwardly-turned hooks c are lixed. To the plates d are pivotedthe fastening-bars A having hooks p and q at their ends, and the notches s, near the pivots, adapt ed, as shown, to engage in the hooks o and c to fast-en the gates securely when closed. The

bars are prevented from becoming unhooked by the pinor key t, which is inserted in a hole or slot through the plate m and just above the hook q when in place. The pin is fastened to the gate by a chain, D, to prevent loss.

These hooks and bars are adapted to secure strength to the Wagon-bed, by tending to prevent the sides from spreading when the wagon is loaded, and also to prevent the gates from being forced open under the same circumstances.

'Ihe gates are easily and quickly opened by removing the pin t, disengaging the bars A,

`and lirst opening the left-hand gate, and they are as easily and quickly closed by a reverse operation; they may be removed readily also from the wagon-bed by taking out the screwplug a from the hinge.

I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the pivoted bars A, having hooks p and g, and with or without the notches s, the hooks c and c', the pin or keyt, and the gates H, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. The combination of the plates L bearing the hinge-eyes E, the hin ge-support F attached to the side of the wagon-bed, the screw-plug c fitted to the hinge-eye, and the gates H, all constructed and arranged substantiallyas and for the purposes set forth.

3. End-gates for Wagon-beds, consist-ing of the gates H, the bars A, the hooks c and c', the hinge-eyes E, the hinge-supports F, and the screw-plug a, all constructed, arranged, and applied substantially as and for the purposes set forth. y
