UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES FISHER, OF LYONS, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE A. HORN, OF NEWARK, NEW YORK.
END-GATE FOR WAGONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 712,284, dated October 28, 1902.
Application filed August 9, 1902. Serial No. 119,066. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ whom, it 11a/ty concern:
Be it'known that I, CHARLES FISHER, of Lyons, in the county of Wayne and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in End-Gates, which improvement is fully set forth in the following speci- .flcation and shown in the accompanying drawings. I
My invention relates to end-gates and chutes to be attached to a Wagon-box, the invention being an improvement upon the device shown and described in Patent No. 701,320, granted to me June 3, 1902.
One object of my present invention is to produce an end-gate having two or more slidable or telescoping sections which may be closed together or massed to act as an endboard for the box or drawn out or extended to act as a chute or skid.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for holding and locking the device in position when acting as an end-board.
' A further object of the invention is to provide holders at the side of the box and form the first or primary slidable section of the end-gate with hooks to pass onto said holders, so the telescoping sections may act as a chute at the side of the box.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will 'be brought out and made to appear in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, the invention being particularly pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a part at the rear end of a wagonbox, showing my improved device in place thereon, parts being shown in various positions by full and by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a plan of the rear part of the wagon-box,showing the end-gate attached at the side. Fig. 3 is a plan of the end-gate drawn out to act las a lengthened skid, seen as indicated by arrow 3 in Fig. 1, parts being broken away and omitted. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of parts, better showing the manner of actuating the notched hangers and of controlling the device when serving as an end-board, parts being shown in various positions by full and by dotted lines. IFig. 5 is a rear side elevation of a part of the device, indicated by arrow 5 in Fig. 4, further showing the construction. Fig. 6, detached, fur- A in the drawings is the wagon-box, B being my improVedend-gate secured to the box. This end-gate comprises a main partor body C, formed of a sheet-metal plate d with upturned sides b and constructed in every other way like the corresponding part B shown and described in said Letters Patent No. 701,320. The body C is formed with a tubular hinge part f, holding a removable hinge-rod la, which passes through the ends of straps h h, secured to the sides of the wagon-box, as shown in said patent, admitting theend-gate to swing in a vertical plane. secured pivotally to the sides b b of the body C, passing through controlling-loops mm, secured at the sides of the wagon-box to determine the positions of said body C, as set forth in said former patent.
The end-gate B is made up of three main parts or sections@` 10 t, all of sheet metal, the sections p and t being formed with upturned sides o and r, respectively. The `primary section p is fitted to slide or telescope within the main section C, the secondary section t similarly telescoping within the primary section p, the three sections being shown in full lines in Fig. l as drawn out or extended and in dotted lines as slid together or bunched.
The wagon-box is formed with an opening D through its side, out through which to deliver the contents of the box when convenient or desirable to do so, provision being made to shift the end-gate, or sections thereof, to a position beneath the opening. Rests or lugs s s, Figs. l and 2, are secured to the box A adjacentY to the opening D in positions to receive the hinge-rod k, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. l. When the lend-gate as a whole is shifted to the side of the box, the tubular part f of the section O occupies a position between and in line with the lugs s s, the rod k passing through all three parts. I prefer, however, to construct the device so Notched hangers Z Z are IOO ssv
the primary section p of the end-gate may be drawn out of the main section C and shifted to the side of the wagon-box, leaving said main section undisturbed in place to continue to act as end-board for the box. For this purpose I extend the sides o o of the section p slightly beyond the iioor of the section to form hooks u u, Figs. 3 and 6, to pass upon pins o o, Fig. 7, secured in horizontal positions to the box A, these pins being substituted for and in the place of the lugs s s.
To conveniently raise the hangers Z Z to release them from the holding-loops m for the purpose of allowing the end-gate to swing back or down from the wagon-box, I have provided a bent shaft w, Figs. l, 4, and 5, held in bearings c, secured to the rear face of the section C of the end-gate. The ends of this shaft are bent forward near the sides b b of the end-gate and connected by straps or links a a with the respective hangers Z l forward of their pivot-bearings n. The shaft is also-formed with a laterally and downwardly extended part e, constituting a handle or lever by which to turn the shaft in its bearings. From the construction shown it will be understood that by pressing the handle e toward the adjacent surface of the end-gate the hangers Z Z will be raised to clear the loops m fm, as shown by dotted positions of parts in Fig. 4t, and allow the end-gate to swing away from the end of the box A. Provision is also made to lock the end-gate in vertical position to close the rear end of the box A, when it acts as an end-board. The extended part or handle e of the shaft w holds a pivotal lever or stop g in position to have its inner short end bear against the plate cZ of the end-gate, as shown in Fig. 4, when turned to a horizontal position. This serves to cause the extreme ends of the shaft to press the links a a down against the hangers ZZ, and so hold the hangers in engagement with the respective loops m m and keep the end-gate in place against the Wagon-box. The handle e being at the rear of the end-gate enables one standing at the rear end of the Wagon to conveniently control the hangers, and so either lock the endgate in its vertical position or free it for the purpose of turning it back from the end of the wagon-box.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. An end-gate and chute for wagons, consisting of a sheet-metal body or holder joined to the wagon-box by a flexible hinge, and telescopic extension pieces or sections held by said body and adapted to slide one within another to lengthen the chute, or to be closed within the body, and means for controlling the body, substantially as set forth.
