Description

Nrrnn BOTTLE-STOPPER..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 624,681, dated May 9, 1899.
Application filed September l, 1898. Serial No. 689,990. (No model.)
T @ZZ wil/0711, it muy concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLES DE QUILL- FELDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Amityville, in the county of Suffolk.
and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle- Y Stoppers, of which the following is a specifigasket applied to the lower part of the stopper-head; and the invention consists of abottlc-stopper provided with an opening, a central raise on said stopper in said opening, and a bail in said opening, said bail having a bent portion formed at an angle greater than ,the angle between the sides of the' raise and bearing by its bent portion on said raise when the stopper is applied to the bottle.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a side elevation of my improved bottle-stopper, showing the same applied to a bottle. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is avertical transverse section through the head of the stopper on line 3 3, Fig. 2, drawn on a larger scale; and Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section through the head on line 4 4, Fig. l.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the bottle-neck, and B the closing-lever, which is applied in the usual manner by means of a neck-wire a to the neck of the bottle, and which is provided with eyes for engaging the inwardly-bent lower ends of the bail C,which passes through a transverse opening in the headD of the stopper. The stopperD is made of porcelain or other suitable material and provided with a transverse opening (Lthrou gh which the bail C can readily pass forassembling the parts of the stopper when applying it to the bottle-neck. The transverse opening CZ is not of equal size throughout, but is contracted at its central portion by providing the lower interior portion of the head with a raise formed by inclines extending from the lower edge ofthe opening toward the center of the opening, as shown clearly in Figs. 2 and 4. The top and bottom of the opening thus diverge from each other from the central mouth of the bottle, so that the rubber gas-.
het g, which is applied to the lower part of the stopper,is compressed in an even and uniform manner, whereby the uniform andtight closing of the stopper in the mouth of the bottle is obtained.
The interior raise in the opening of the stopper-head does not prevent the free motion of the head on the bail, which is an essential point in bottle-Stoppers of this class; but it secures the connection with the central bend in the transverse portion of the bail, and thereby the automatic and reliable centering` of the stopper-head when the loail is closed. This is an important feature, as the uneven compression of the gasket or irregular position ofthe stopper-head in closing the bottle is entirely obviated and a tight and reliable and uniform closing of the bottle by the stopper obtained.
To avoid any chance of failure of the stop.- per to properly conform to the bottle-mouth and perfectly seat itself thereon, the angle between the sides of the raise` may be less than the angle between the sides of the bail, as
in Figs?) and 4, and the central raise may be rounded and the bail curved instead of sharply bent.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of a stopper provided with an opening, a Central raise on said s top- In testimony that I 'claim the foregoing as per in said opening, and a bail in said openmy invention I have signed my name in presing, said bail having a bent portion formed enee of two subscribing Witnesses.
at an angie greater than the angle between CHARLES DE QUILLFELDT. 5 the sides of the raise and bearing by its bent Witnesses:
portion on said raise When the stopper is ap- PAUL GOEPEL, plied to the bottle, substantially as set forth.
