PLOW-CLEVIS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 624,548, dated l-VIay 9, 1899.
Application filed .Tune 24, 1898. Serial lilo.4 684,377. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN FITZPATRICK RUSSELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Site, in the county of Tallapoosa and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Plow-Olevis, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to clevises; and its object is to prevent the draft thereon from wearing or breaking the front part thereof. This and. other peculiar features and advantages of my invention will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the drawings, and particularly pointed out inthe claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional viewthereof.
Corresponding parts in both figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
Referring to the drawings, l and 2 designate the top and bottom arms or straps, respectively, and 3 the front connecting-arm, upon which the draft is placed. Each of the arms 1, 2, and 3 is formed with a longitudinal strengthening-rib 4. upon the outer face thereof.
The clevis is fastened to the plowbea1n in the usual manner by a bolt 5, having a Wrenchhead 6. This wrench-head is deflected or formed at an angleto the bolt forming the handle of the wrench, whereby the wrench may be conveniently used upon a broad fiat surface. The under arm 2 is provided with a pair of lugs 7, one on each side thereof, and adapted to engage the sides of the beam and aline the clevis thereon. The front arm 3 is provided with a number of webs or partitions S, forming grooves or recesses 9, in which the draft-hook may be placed. The upper and lower arms and the webs are each provided with a bolt-opening 10, alining from top to bottom and adapted to receive a replaceable bolt Il. This b'olt is provided at each end with a nut 12, bearing against the upper and lower arms of the clevis and holding the bolt in position. The object of this bolt is to receive the wear occasioned by the draft and thus preserve the clevis as an entirety, the bolt being replaced when worn out or turned end for end by removing the nuts 12. As the bolt is separate from the clevis itself, it may vbind the'whole clevis together firmly, and
should either the top or bottom arm break a simple strap of iron having holes to receive the bolt 5 at one end and the bolt l1 at the other will render the clevis perfectly strong and durable. If from any cause the front arm 3 should break, the bolt 1l will still conneet the arms l and 2 together, and thus would not aect the utility of the device. Should it be desired to use the clevis without the bolt 11, the same can be quickly and easily removed therefrom. The bolt-openings are preferably arranged so that the bolt will bear as much as possible against the front arm of the clevis, so as to more evenly distribute the strain occasioned by the draft.
Itwill thus be noted that myinvention resides solely in providing a Wear surface or bolt for the clevis, which binds the whole device firmly together and which at the same time is removable and can be utilized to repair the clevis if it should become broken, asherein described. This combination, in a clevis, of a removable wear bolt or surface I believe to be an entirely new feature in the art, and therefore changes in the form, proportion, and minor details may be made Without departing from the spirit and scope or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise construction and arrangement as herein described.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of a clevis provided with a solid closed front end forming the draft-arm, and a replaceable wear-bolt arranged against the inner side of said armand extending the entire length thereof, substantiallyas and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination with a clevis composed of upper and lower arms or straps and a front connecting draft-arm, of a removable wearsurface arranged to bear against the inner face of the draft-arm of the clevis, wherebythe strain is distributed evenly, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
IOO
3. The combination with a elevis composed of upper and lower arms or straps and a front' connecting draft-arm, the upper and lower arms being provided with alined bolt-openings disposed adjacent to the inner side of the connecting-arm, of a removable bolt fitted in said openings and flush against the entire inner side of the connecting-arm, whereby the draft is evenly distributed and a removable Wear-surface is provided, in the manner i herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
BENJAMIN FITZPATRICK RUSSELL. Witnesses:
J. T. SANDLIN, MARCUS HERZFELD.
