PETER ERIOK ERICKSON, OF PORT OHESTER,NEW YORK.
BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 624,464, dated May 9, 1899.
Apnlication filed September 27, 1898. Serial No. 692,033. (No model.)
To allwhom-zlt may concern.-
Beit known that I, PETERERICK ERICKSON, a citizen ofV the" United States, residing at Port Chester,in thecountyof Westchester and State ofNew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Brushes,of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to brushes for use in cleaning dishes and glassware of various kinds and classes; and the object thereof is to provide a brush for this purpose which is simple in construction and operation and comparatively inexpensive.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, inwhich- Figure lis a side elevation ofa brush made according to myinvention; Fig. 2, asimilar view showing the method of forming the brush, and Fig. 3 a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. l.
I'n the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of-reference in each of the views, and in the practice of my invention I provide a brush comprising a handle 5, having at one end an enlarged annular shoulder 6, which is provided with a central projection '7 in line with the handle. The central projection 7 is provided with a transverse slot or opening 8, and in forming the brush proper I provide a flexible cord 9, over which is folded a flexible strip 11 of canvas or other suitable material, which is stitched longitudinally, as shown Aat 12, so as to hold the cord therein.
The material l0 of which the brush proper is composed, and which may consist'of seagrass, bristles, or other suitable material, is placed in the fold of the fiexible strip ll throughout its entire length and is stitched or otherwise secured therein in any desired manner. One end of this flexible folded strip is secured in the transverse slot 8 in the extension 7 of the handle 5, and the flexible strip 11 is then wrapped around said extension and the loose end of the cord secured in place either by tying it tothe handle, as shown a 13, or in any desired manner. Y r
By means of this construction I provide a brush which is perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended and -which is also comparatively inexpensive, and it will be apparent that the brush maybe unfolded from the handle whenever desired to be cleaned and again folded around the handle to be used again, and any suitable material may be used in the construction of the brush; and changes in and modifications of the construction described maybe made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages,
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A brush, comprising a handle having at one end an enlarged annular shoulder orprojection which is provided with an extension, and a flexible strip folded longitudinally, one end of which is secured to said extension, the material of the brush being arranged longitudinally of said strip and between the folds thereof and secured between said folds, said strip being adapted to be wrapped around said extension, and being also provided at its free end with a cord by which it is secured tothe handle, substantially as shown and described.
2; A brush, comprisinga handlebaving an extension` at one end, and a flexible strip foldedcentrally and longitudinally, and one end of which is secured to said extension, bristles or other brushv material securedrbetween the folds of said strip longitudinally thereof, said strip being adapted to be wrapped around said extension, and being provided with a cord which is passed therethrough, and which projects through the free end thereof, and by means of which the free end of said strip is secured to said handle, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in pres,- ence of the subscribing witnesses, this 23d day of September, 1.898.
PETER ERIOK ERICKSON.
