Description
J. NOVAK.
roomaausu. APPLICATION FILED 001122. 1921- 1,417,407. Patented May23,1922.1
ATTORNEY JOSEPH NOVA K, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TOOTHBRUSH.
Application filed October 22, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH NOVAK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tooth Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toothbrushes and an object of the invention is to provide a toothbrush b means of which the teeth can be thoroughly cleaned from the inside as 'well as from the outside, prevents the accumulation of tartar on the inner surface of the teeth which occurs from failure to properly clean the inner surface, other objects of the invention are to provide a tooth brush which will prevent bleeding of the gums by regulating the pressure on the teeth by the brush, one which will prevent the soiling of a persons chin or face with the cream and one which is easy to operate and will permit the user to thoroughly cleanhis teeth in a comparatively short time.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanyin drawing wherein:
Fig. l is a side elevation of the improved tooth brush.
Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the improved toothbrush comprises a head structure 1 which is pivotally connected by means of a rivet 2 to the handle 3 in such a manner as to permit tilting of the handle relative to the head during the cleaning of the teeth.
The head structure 1 comprises spaced bristle carrying plates 4 and 5 which are connected by a connecting plate or web 6 disposed intermediate the side edges of the plates 4 and 5. The plates 4 and 5 are curved longitudinally so as to fit the curvature of the teeth of the user and they have bristles 7 of approved construction secured thereto and projecting inwardly from their inner surfaces. The free ends of the bristles carried by the plate 4 facing the free ends of the bristles carried by the plate 5 and in Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 23, 1922. Serial No. 509,502.
spaced relation thereto sufficiently to permit proper engagement of the bristles with the teeth of the user.
The plate or web 6 is provided with a slot 8 curved to conform to the curvature of the plates 4 and 5, and a tooth rest or gripper 10 is slidably mounted in the slot 8. The tooth rest or gripper 10 is formed of relatively soft rubber, cork or analogous material and its ends are recessed to receive the edges of the slot 8 to prevent accidental disconnection of the gripper and plate 6.
In use, the improved toothbrush is inserted in the mouth of the user with the bristles 7 carried by the plate 4 inwardly of the teeth and engaging the inner surface of the teeth while the bristles 7 of the plate 5 engage the outer surface of the teeth. Certain of the teeth are then firmly gripped on the gripper 10 and the brush is moved from one side of the mouth to the other thoroughl cleaning the front and the back of the teeth.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be apparent that only a few strokes of the brushwill be necessary to thoroughly clean the teeth of the user and that it will not be necessary to remove the brush from the mouth of the user during the cleaning operation as the bristles of the brush will engage all of the teeth during the movement of the brush across the mouth.
It is, of course, to be understood that the invention may be constructed in other man ners and the parts associated in different relations, and therefore, I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. In a toothbrush a head structure comprising spaced connected plates curved to conform to the curvature of the users mouth, and bristles attached to and extending inwardly from the facing surface of said plates, said bristle carrying plates being connected by a web having an arcuate slot therein and a resilient member slidable in said slot and adapted to be gripped by the teeth of the user.
2. In a toothbrush, a head structure comprising spaced connected plates curved to conform to the curvature of the users mouth, and bristles attached to and extending inwardly from the facing surface of said. plates, said bristle carrying plates being connected by a Web haying.- an-arcuate slot therein and a resilient member slidable in said slot and adapted to be gripped"by=the teeth of the user, and a handle pivotally con- 10 nected to said head.
3. A tooth brush comprising curved plates connected by a Web, a handle connected to the plates, bristles secured to the plates, and a yieldable member slidably embracing the 15 Walls of an' arcuate slot in said web.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
JOSEPH NOVAK.
