Be it known that 1, AUGUST S. HELD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Handles, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to certain improve ments in box-handles of the class in which a pivoted handle hearing a suitable grip is secured to the box or other load by means of a plate adapted to be countersunk in said box and itself containing a depression or recess adapted to receive the handle and permit the latter to lie within said recess back of the plane of the front of the plate.

The object of the invention is to so construct the plate and handle that they may be easily and cheaply cast or stamped in the simplest form and assembled or put together with the least expense; and to such end the invention consists in certain novel features of construction,which will appear from the following description and will be clearly pointed out in the appended claims.

The drawings show a plate A of the common rectangular form containing a recess or depression a of the proper form to receive and hold a handle B, composed of a grip 1), adapted to the hand, two legs 1) b and oppositely-extending lugs 19 b projecting from the ends of the legs. Upon the back of the plate are two bearing-sockets a a adapted to receive the pivotal portions of the handle. Adjacent to these sockets are two openings a a through which the legs of the handle pass, and these openings are extended downward and then laterally at a a sufficiently to receive the oppositely-extending pivotal lugs and allow the latter to pass through. In putting the handle and the plate together in the form shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4: the legs of the handle, together with their pivotal extensions, are passed through the lower portion of the openings in the plate and then raised until they rest in the sockets upon the rear side of the latter, in which position they are held by the material of the box back of the plate. The pivotallugs and the portions of the handle immediately adjacent to the legs are preferably made to extend laterally in the same direction, so that the additional openings necessary to permit of the passage of the lugs may be covered by these portions of the handle.

The modification shown in Figs. 5, 6, and 7 consists in the addition of clips 0 0'', secured to the plate back of the pivotal lugs of the handle and adapted to hold the handle in position without relying upon the material of the box.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with a handle having a suitable grip,legs extending therefrom and oppositely-extending pivotal lugs upon the legs, of a fastening-plate having bearin g-sockets for said lugs upon its rear side, openings alongside of said sockets adapted to receive and hold the legs in position and extensions of said openings large enough to receive the pivotal lugs, said lugs and the corresponding portions of the handle-grip adjacent to said legs extending laterally from said legs in the same direction and said extensions of the openings in the plate being arranged behind said ad j acent portions of the handle-grip, whereby said portions of the handle may lie in front of said extensions of the openings when the handle is in its normal position parallel with the plate; substantially as described.

2. The combination with a handle having a suitable grip, legs extending therefrom and pivotal projections upon the legs, of a fastening-plate having sockets upon its rear side to receive said pivotal projections, contiguous openings to receive and hold the legs, extensions of said openings large enough to receive the pivotal projections and clips secured to the rear of the plate, back of said pivotal projections; substantially as described.

3. The combination with a handle having a suitable grip, legs extending therefrom and laterally-extending pivotal projections upon the legs, of a fastening-plate having upon its rear side, hearings adapted to receive and hold the pivotal projections of the handle when the latter is in its normal operative position, openings in said plate adapted to permit of the passage through them of the legs and the pivotal projections thereon when the handle is out of its normal position but not when in said position and means for retaining the handle in its normal position when upon the box; substantially as described.
