To all whmn it may concern.-

Be it known that I, TREFFLE GUILBAULT, a subject of Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain, residing in the city and district of Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent of the Dominion of Canada, dated April 13, 1898, and numbered 59,604,) and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear, full, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in bedsteads, and has particular relation to devicesof this character which are capable of being folded to form a sofa.

The object of my invention is to provide a bedstead which is neat and attractive in appearance, durable in construction, and which can be operated with great case.

To these and other ends my invention consists in the improved construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate similarparts in all of the views, Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved bedstead when intended for use as a bed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same when used as a sofa. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the bedstead in the position shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail of the hinged foot and catch.

A designates a bedstead having the bottom a, ends a, and back a To the bottom is connected the front as by means of hinges located between the upper face of the bottom and the lower edge of the front, the construction being such that the frontmay assume a vertical or horizontal position, as desired, the former being the position when used as a sofa, the latter when used as a bed. The upper edge of the front a is provided with a series of hingedly-mounted feet a", formed substantially as shown in Fig. 4, the foot portion a serving as a fastening for the front into vertical position by being passed over suitable pins a secured to the ends a. When the front is in the position shown in Fig. 1, the feet a rest on the floor, and thus serve to support the front inposition and give the front a slight upward inclination to prevent the falling outof children when placed therein.

A top a is hingedly connected to the back a and is provided with suitable folding supports a adapted to retain the top in vertical position when the device is used as a bed.

Springs a are secured to the bottom a and the inner face of the front a in such manner as will allow of a ready folding in position when the bed is folded to form the sofa, as shown in Fig. 3. As a space is formed on the inside when the bed is folded, it is apparent that the bedding can be readily stored therein.

A head-rest a is hingedly connected to one end and is-adapted to fold over on the top when the bed is closed, as shown in Fig. 2, or to be turned over, as shown in Fig. 1, when used as a bed.

A pad a is adapted to rest on the top when used as a sofa. It will be obvious that this pad may be removable or fixed, as desirable.

The operation of the device is obvious, and it is not thought necessary to set it forth in detail.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is l. A sofa-bedstead comprising a frame having a fixed bottom, ends and back; a front hingedly connected to said bottom; a top hingedly connected to said back; supports for said back when in a vertical position; and pivotal supports for said front when in horizontal position.

A sofa-bedstead, comprising a frame having a fixed bottom, ends and back, and also having a front and top each hingedly connected thereto; supports for said top in its open position; and supports for said front when in open position said supports also serving to secure said front in its closed position.

A combined foot and catch, comprising a hinge; and an extension secured to one of the leaves of said hinge, said extension having its end bent at an angle to form a hook adapted to engage with a stop when in one top when in closed position, substantially as position and also to serve as a supportingdescribed. 10 foot, substantially as described.
