[We/22hr Louis Malia,
LOUIS MOLLE, OF PARIS, FRANCE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WALTER J. FLATTERY, OF SAME PLACE.
WOOD CARPET OR FLOOR-COVERING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,923, dated April 25, 1899.
Application filed January 1 8, 1 8 96.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOUIS MOLLE, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at Paris, in the Department of Seine and Republic of France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wood Carpets or Floor- Coverings, of. which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to an improved wood carpet or floor-coverin g, and it is embodied in the construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a section with its securing means. Fig. 2 is a cross-section through a number of sections as they appear when in place, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the securingplates.
For producing the article which I call wood carpet I use, preferably, designs such as are used in the art of making colored-wood mosaic or wood tapestry, and the sheets which I have produced in the above-described way I unite to a wooden foundation. For this purpose I make wood flooring such as in use for forming the floors of houses and which has a tongue formed on one edge and a corresponding groove at the other. To this flooring I firmly unite the sheets (they being made of corresponding width) by the use of ,suitable cement or glue and pressure, so as to cover the whole exposed surface of the board, and then on the under side of each board I. 3 5 cut recesses T along the edges and secure the plates U flush with the under side of the board across these recesses, all in such manner as to form sockets along both edges of the board at suitable distances apart for the reception of one-half of the dowel-plates V, which are Serial No. 575,982. (No model.)
formed with a central body portion provided with a screw-hole for securing it to the subfioor and with oppositely-extending tongues adapted to fit into the sockets in the boards. In laying such a floor the first board is kept in place along the outer edge of the wall by being made to project under the lower edge of the base-board,while the inner edge is kept down by inserting dowel-plates into the sockets at the inner edge and then screwing the dowel-plates to the floor. The next board is then engaged with the projecting halves of the dowel-plates and its opposite edge secured in like manner by dowels. Continuing in this manner until the last board is laid, the latter is again held in place along the wall by means of the base-board. In this manner the floor is easily laid and securely heldin place without danger of damage to the.design, and it can be readily taken up again, if needed.
What I claim as my invention is- As a new article of manufacture, a flooring composed of tongue-and-grooved flooringboards, provided upon their upper face with thin sheets of colored-wood mosaic permanently secured thereto and upon their lower side with recesses extending at intervals along their edges, corresponding in all the boards and provided with plates forming sockets, and dowel-pins adapted to fit into the recesses and sockets of the boards and provided with means for securing them in position upon the floorsupport, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS MOLLE.
