No. 186,463. Patented Jan. 23, 1877. I 4

FLEETERS, PHOTO-UTHQGRAPNER, WASHINGTON D c UNITED STAT S PATENT OFFICE,
OTIS S. DICKINSON, OF GRANVILLE CORNERS, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT m FLOORING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,463, dated January 23, 1877 application filed December 18, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTIS S. DIoKINsoN, of Granville Corners, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Tessellated Flooring, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line as a: in Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
My invention relates to a peculiar fastening for the blocks composing tessellated wood flooring; and it consists of fastening strips that are T-shaped in cross section, and are fastened to the floor, and fit into grooves cut across the end of the grain in the blocks, the object being to provide an inexpensive, strong, and durable ornamental flooring.
In the drawing, A A, &c., are wooden strips that are T-shaped in cross-section, and are secured to an ordinary floor, B, by means of screws or nails, the distance between the centers of the blocks being equal to the width of the face of the blocks composing the fioor mg. 7
Blocks C, which may have either a square, rhoinbic, or other regular geometric form, are grooved, preferably, across the end of the grain of ihe wood, so as to fit the T-shaped strip and overlap it at the top. The ends of the adjacent blocks meet over the center of the strip, concealing it.
The blocks are placed upon the floor in rows,
and the fastening-strips are secured in place after each row-is arranged.
Byusing blocks of various colors and forms thefioor may be variegated with any ornamental design that may be produced by a combination of quadrilateral figures.
The advantages claimed for my invention are that the entire floor can be made up of small pieces, which are securely fastened by the T-shaped strip.
The design of the flooring may be varied to suit the different rooms in which it is laid, without additional expense, asthe blocks are all of the same size and character, varying only in color.
The blocks may be laid over an old floor, being made so thin as not to interfere with the opening or closing of the doors, and, when ventio-n. For example, triangular blocks may be used in forming the design, and strips having a dovetail cross-section may be employed to fasten the blocks to the floor.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The blocks C, secured to the floor B by T- strips nailed to floor, and fitting grooves of the blocks, as shown and described.
OTIS S. DICKINSON. Witnesses:
E. D. DICKINSON, BURTON SULLIVAN.
