Description

G. P. CHAPPELL.
TILE BOARD.
Patented May 107 i910.

. GEORGE P. CHAPPELL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TILE-BOARD.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented May titl), TSP/MD..
Application tiled 'March 13, 1909. Serial No. 483,272.
To all iwhom it may concern:
Be it known that T, GEORGE CHAPPELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tile- Boards, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in tiling adapted for use in floors, walls, or the like.
@ne of the objects of the invention is to provide a tile board comprising a base one surface of which is completely covered by tiling whch is permanently secured thereto, in order that a flooring or wall covering may be built up by using a number of said tile boards, thereby avoiding the necessity of inserting separate lling in pieces after the tile boards are placed 1n position.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exem liiied in the construction hereinafter set torth, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claim.
The accompanying drawing .illustrates a view in perspective of a portion of fiooring built up of tile boards comprising one of the various possible embodiments of this inven tion. t
Referring to the drawing each of the tile boards or units 1 comprises a base 2 of Wood or any other suitable fibrous material which may be of any desired dimension and which is provided with a tongue 3 upon one edge thereof and a corresponding groove t upon the opposite edge adapted to receive the tongue of another unit, whereby adjacent tile boards may be interlocked with oneanother as clearly shown in the gure. The upper surface of the base 2 is completely covered by tiling 5 formed of a cementitious material of such a character that it will rmly adhere thereto. While any suitable material may be empleyed, I prefer to use an 0X chlorid cement such as 'that described 1n Letters Patent No. 703,640, issued to me on July l, 1902. This material, which may be applied to the surface of the base in any suitable manner, is preferably scored, while in a plastic condition, by intersecting lines 6 and 7, thereby forming a plurality of individual tile elements 8. Tf desired certain of these elements may be removed and their places filled with tile elements 9 of cementitious material having a different characteristie, thereby forming any suitable design, as indicated in the gure.
The lmethod of laying a door or wall composed of a -plurality of these individual tile beards or units is similar to that employed in layino' an ordinary hard wood Hooring, nails l0 tbeing driven through the base 2 in an angular direction into the sub-structure ll upon which it is to be supported, said tile boards being so placed that the groove formed upon each of the same will interlock with the tongue of the tile board adjacent thereto, whereby a close joint is formed.
It will be seen from the above that a Hoor or wall may be built up of these tile boards with great rapidity by unskilled labor. A By so constructing the tile board that the entire surfacel of the base 'thereof is completely coveredby the tiling, it will at once be seen that the insertion of separate lling in pieces after the boards are positioned is unnecessary, thereby saving time and labor in the laying of floors, walls, or the like.
As many changes could be made Ain the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the'scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the abovel'description or shown in the accompanying y/drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. It is also to be understood that the language used inv the following claim is intended to cover all of the generic and specific' features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language might be said to fall therebetween.
Having described my invention what I which Yit is secured, the opposite edges of 1o Claim as new and desire to secure by Letters said base being provided With a tongue and Patent is: groove respectively.
As an article of manufacture, a tile board In testimony whereof aix iny signature, consisting of a base of fibrous material proin the presence of two Witnesses. vided with a layer of cementitious material GEO. P. CHAPPELL. .secured to one surface thereof and' com- Witnesses:
