NTTE STATES PATENT FFICEE.
PAUL ROBINS TRETHEWVEY, OF MUSKOKA FALLS, CANADA.
GUARD FOR FREIGHT-CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patefit No. 623,589, dated April 25, 1899.
Application filed February 2, 1899. Serial No. 704,263. (No model.)
To (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PAUL RoBINs TRETHE- WEY, a subject ofIIer Majesty the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Muskoka Falls,
will enable others skilled in the art to which" it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in detachable guards for freight-cars; and it consists in suitable standards provided with eyes through their upper ends and suitable clamps upon their lower ones for securing the standards to the car, a rope or chain which is passed through the eyes at the upper ends of thestandards, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to provide a detachable guard which can be applied to and quickly removed from any freight-car and which serves to prevent the brakeman from falling off the cars.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a detachable guardwhich embodies my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same.
A represents the roof of a freight or other car, and B the standards of the guard, which are attached to the projecting portions of the running-board'by'means of the clamps 0 upon the lower end of each guard. This guard consists of the inwardly-turned end D of the standard, through which the screw E passes vertically, and the projection F, which is provided with the brace G. The projection F catches over the top of the running-board or any suitable place for it, while the upper end of the screw E clamps the under edge of this board and rigidly secures the standards in position. This clamp is used for the purpose of making the guards attachable to or detachable from any of the freight-cars now in use and dispenses with all other fastenings.
Through the upper ends of the standards B are formed suitable eyes or openings, and
through these eyes is passed .a rope or chain any suitable manner, so that a slack of the rope or chain can be taken up and held perfectly taut. r
. Heretofore a guard has been attached to a freight-car, but it has been permanently secured thereto, and the construction employed is 'difierent and more costly than what is here shown by me. By my construction the guard can be quickly applied to and detached from a car, and hence can be transferred from one car to another, as circumstances require. This detachable feature is a valuable and important part of my invention, for the guards can be taken from those cars which are not in immediate use and applied to those that are, and thus lessen the risks of life and limb of the brakeman.
Having thus described my invention, I claim A detachable guard for cars, the standards B provided with the inwardly-turned ends D, projections F, and braces G, combined with thescreW-clamps E, the ropes or chains that pass through the upperends of the standards, and the pins or cleats to which the ends of the ropes or chains are fastened, and by means of which theymay be tightened, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
