JAMES FLOYD FENDER, OF STOCKTON, GEORGIA.
CAR-STANDARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 21, 1909.
Application filed October 17, 1908. Serial No. 458,320.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs F. FENDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stockton, in the county of Clinch and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Car-Standard; and I do-hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to improvements in car standards and has for its object to provide standards for a car or vehicle composed of iron or other suitable strong material, capable of being locked in a vertical position or which can be arranged in a horizontal position when desired.
Another object of the device is to provide means for connecting the two standards together and for tensioning the same when desired.
With-these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pair of my standards shown applied to a car. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of one of the standards shown in a horizontal position. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken through a portion of the upper end of the standard. Fig. 4: is an enlarged view showing a plan of the mechanism for locking the pivoted lever.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a standard mounted on a plate 2, which plate is connected with the body of the car. In practice, the plate can be formed integrally with the car if desired. The standard 1 is pivotally connected with the plate 2 as at 3. The plate 2 is provided with shoulders or stops 4 and 5. These stops prevent the standard from moving in one direction when in a vertical position. When it is desired to lock the standard in a vertical position the lower end of a locking lever 6 is pressed inwardly which engages the shoulder t as clearly shown in Fig. 1
of the drawings. In order to prevent the lower end of the lever 6 from swinging too far outwardly, a rigid block 7 is provided.
. WVhen it is desired to lock the standards in their vertical position, after the lever 6 has been brought into engagement with the shoulder 4, a slotted locking pin is pressed downward between the block 7 and the lever 6 which forces the lower end of the lever inwardly, as will be readily understood.
The upper end of each standard is provided with a spring hook 9 which engages a loop 10 of one end of a rod. The rods 11 and 12 each extend approximately from a standard to about half way between the two standards. The inner end of the rod 12 is screw threaded and engages a turn buckle 13. The turn buckle 13 is swiveled to a short rod 14 which rod 14 is connected with the rod 11. It will be seen that the rods 11. and 12 can be readily tightened by rotating the turn buckle.
IVhat is claimed is:
1. A device of the class described, comprising a car, a standard pivotally connected thereto, a shoulder adjoining the lower portion of said car and arranged adjacent the lower end of said standard, a lever pivotally connected to said standard and adapted to engage said shoulder, for locking said standard in a vertical position.
2. A device of the class described comprising a car, a standard pivotally mounted thereon, a lever arranged longitudinally of said standard and pivotally connected thereto, a shoulder connected with said car adapted to be engaged by said lever, a slotted member pivotally connected with said stand ard, and adapted to engage said lever for preventing the accidental release thereof, substantially as described.
3. A device of the class described, comprising acar, a standard pivotally mounted thereon, said standard being capable of assuming a vertical or horizontal position and a locking lever pivotally connected to said standard for locking the same in a vertical position, and a rigid block mounted on said standard and adapted to limit the outward movement of the lower end of said locking lever. I
L. The combination of a pair of standards having their upper ends provided with spring hooks, rods having looped ends adapt-v ed to engage said spring hooks, and means for tensioning said rods.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of L0 two subserlblng Witnesses.
JAMES FLOYD FENDER.
