The invention relates to securing chains used in connection with flat cars on which logs and the likeare shipped and has for its object to provide a device of this character comprising brackets pivotally connected to the opposite sides of the car, said brackets having their upper ends provided with detachable pins, to one of which pins is pivotally connected one end of a load securing chain, which chain is adapted to pass over the load and have its other end detachably connected to the upper end of the oppositely pivoted bracket. Also to provide the brackets with removable pins whereby the chain at both of its ends may be released as desired. V e
A further object is to provide inwardly and downwardly extending detachable stay chains, said stay chains extending downwardly from the upper end of the pivoted brackets and having their lower ends detachably connected in links carried by the car flooring. I
A further object is to provide means and so construct the brackets that by removing the pins of the brackets the brackets and load'holding chains will be released.
' With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a conventional form of fiat car, showing the invention applied thereto.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a conventional form of flat car, which flat car is provided with longitudinal sills 2 and transversely disposed sills 3, there being stakes 4 for holding a load, said stakes being of conventional form. The

ings, it will be seen that only one chain is shown, however, it is to be understood that any number of chains may be used according to the type of car to which the device is applied. Secured to the ends of the sill 3 as at 6 are brackets 7, each of which brackets comprises the side members 8, the upper ends of which are connected together by a U- shaped member 9 which is welded or otherwise secured to the members 8 and forms means for stiffening the bracket. Extending transversely through apertures 10 of each bracket is a removable pin 11, said pin being provided with an eye 12 in which eye the book 13 of the eye bolt removing chain 14 is hooked'when it is desired to remove the pin and release the chains. The ends of the pins 11 are provided with cotter pins 15 which are removed before the pins are removed, said cotter pins forming means for preventing displacement of the pins 11;
The brackets 7 are pivotally mounted on the bolts 6 and are adapted to swing outwardly and downwardly against the sides of the car when not in use. When it is desired to secure the load on the car, the pin 11 is re- 1 moved sufliciently to allow said pin to pass through the aperturcd plate 16 carried by one end of the load holding chain 17 and the apertured plate 18 carried by one end of one of the stay chains 19. Stay chains 19 incline downwardly and inwardly and have their free ends disposed in grab links 20 carried by eye bolts 21 which pass through the flooring of the car. Chain 17 has its free end passed over the load as clearly shown in obvious that slight variations in the structure may be necessary according to slight variations in car construction.
