SALATHIEL O. FANOHER, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
TRUSS.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N0. 623,207, dated April 18, 1899. Application filed August 5, 1896. Serial No- BOLSOB. (No model.)
To CLZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SALATHIEL O. FANCHER,
of Kansas City, Jackson county, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trusses, of which the following is a.fnll, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to certain improvements in hernial trusses, though equally adapted for analogous purposes or uses on the human body.
It has for its object, among other things, principally to provide for the ready adaptation of the truss to the body of the person, whether of greater or less belt or stoutness; also, to readily vary or increase and decrease the application of the pressure of the pad to the affected part, and to render it reversible end for end for the application of either of the two pads, one at each end of the truss; also, to make itlight, cool and durable, to promote simplicity of construction, to lessen cost of manufacture, and to provide for exerting the maximum as also a varied and positive pressure upon the body.
To these ends the invention consists, primarily, of two opposite suitablyproduced coils or helices adapted to serve in the capacity of pads, united by a suitably curved or shaped intermediary flexible connection or yoke, itself terminatingin recurved intermediary-looped extension portions where conjunction is made with the coils or helices, and in the detailed construction and arrangement of the various parts, all substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Latitude is allowed herein as to details, barring the same as stated in the claims, as the same may be changed without departing from the spirit of my invention and the latter yet remain intact.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred form of carrying out my invention, Figurel is afront view thereof, and Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detailed side view of one of the helical pads or coils.
In the embodiment of my invention I produce, preferably, from stout springy wire-two conical spiral coils or helices 2 2, adapted to serve in the capacity of pads to press the affected parts, connected or united by an in termediary portion, yoke, or member 1, suitably curved tb preferably conform to the contour of the body of the wearer, all being in one piece. The coils or helices are preferably deflected laterally inward to increase the otherwise minimum pressure thereof upon the body.
The yoke or member 1, it will be observed,
' is provided with recurved or double-bent end portions or extensions 3 3 where it unites with the coils orhelices 2 2, thus providing intermediary looped extension portions between said member or yoke and said coils or helices. Therefore should it be found that the pads or coils normally would not come opposite the ruptured or affected parts with the intermediary portion or yoke applied to the body because of shortness of the yokeit will be seen that by pulling bodily upon the coils or helices in the required direction the same can be elongated and the proper disposing or positioning of the latter will be effected, or if it be necessary to contract or shorten the intermediary portion or yoke to properly dispose the coils or helices they can be oppositely manipulated for that purpose, the lower portions of said end portions or extensions recurving or bending toward their upper portions.
A web or strap 3, to aid in holding the truss in position upon the body of the wearer, is connected at one end to one coil in any wellknown way, and the other end thereof is connected detachably to the other coil, it may be, by a buckle at, as shown, or otherwise, as described.
The principal advantages of my invention, as above enumerated, have been made apparent from the foregoing. Therefore it is unnecessary to further refer to the same herein. Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, the hernial truss consisting of the yoke or girth wire, the terminal coil or pad, and the intermediary looped extension portion, all in a single piece, the latter standing or arranged in a plane above the coil or pad, substantially means for aiding the application of the truss as set forth. to the body, substantially as set forth. IO 2. As a new article of manufacture, the In testimony whereof I aflix my signature hernial truss consisting of the girth or yoke in presence of two Witnesses.
Wire, the terminal coils or pads, and the in- SALATHIEL C. FANCHER.
termediary looped extension portions, all in \Vitnesses:
a single piece, the latter arranged or stand- G. Y. THORPE,
ing in a plane above said coils or pads, and 1 M. R. REMLEY.
