FASTENING DEVICE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,167, dated April 18, 1899.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILTON EsMoND LIND- SAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glendale, in the county of Spartanburg and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices, of which the following is a full and complete specificatioinsuch as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to fastening devices; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is designed to connect the ends of the waistband of a shirt at the back and also to serve as means for preventing a belt from moving upwardly.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a front view of my improved fastening device and showing the method of connecting the same with the waistband of a skirt, and Fig. 2 a plan view thereof.

In the drawings formingpart of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in said drawings I have shown at 5 and 6 the top flaps of a skirt formed by-the ordinary placketopening, or said parts may represent the ends of the waistband of a skirt, and in the practice of my invention I provide a fastening device for connecting said parts and also for holding a belt in proper position, said fastening device being composed of spring-Wire bent to form a horizontal bottom 7, the sides 8, and an upwardly-directed hook 9,the front portion of which is bent downwardly, as shown at 10, and one of the sides 8 is provided centrally thereof with a shank 11, having outwardly-directed arms 12, which are bent backwardly parallel with said shank to form prongs 13.

This device is made by bending the wire so as to form at one corner an eye or ring 1 1, then to form the bottom 7, then to form the eye or ring 15, then the side 8 adjacent to the eye or ring 15, then the eye or ring 16, then the hook 9, and the eye or ring 17, after which the separate parts of the wire are twisted together to form the shank 11 and bent to form the prongs 13, the points of which extend over the eyes or rings 14 and 17.

In practice the fastening device is connected with one end of the waistband or with one of the flaps formed by the placket-opening by stitching the eyes or rings 14 to 17, inclusive, thereto, as clearly shown in the drawings, and the prongs 13 are passed through the other end of the waistband or-the adjacent flap formed by the placketopening, and the belt, which is shown in dotted lines at 18 in Fig. 2, is passed around the fastening device or the body portion thereof and beneath the hook 9.

My improved device forms a simple, effective, and economical fastening device for the purpose specified and is entirely concealed when in use by the belt 18, except the downwardly-directed portion 10 of the hook 9, and it will be apparent that changes in and modie fications of -the construction described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

l. A fastening device composed of springwire bent to form a body portion provided with an upwardly-directed hook which opens downwardly, and at one side with an outwardly-directed shank having backwardly-directed prongs or pins, substantially as shown and described.

2. A fastening device composed of springwire bent to form a body portion composed of the bottom 7, and sides 8, and provided with an upwardly-directed hook 9, and a side shank 11 provided with arms 12, and backwardly-directed prongs 13, substantially as shown and described.
