WALTER L. SIEWERS, OF WINSTON SALEM, NORTH CAROLINA.
BUTTONLESS UNION GARMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May Y 1912 Application filed. Apr1'14, 1910. Serial No. 555,411.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, WALTER L. SIEwERs, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at Winston Salem, in the county of Forsyth and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttonless Union Garments; and I do here* by declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to buttonless union garments, and has for an object to provide a union garment having improved means for closure without the use of buttons or other metallic or unyielding fastenings.
A further object of the invention is to provide a union garment open at the top between the shoulders with flaps secured adjacent the shoulders and foldable across the breast and secured to the top of the body portion of the garment by ribbons or other ties.
With these and other objects in view, the invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view of the garment in front elevation with the flaps closed and tied. Fig. 2 is a view of t-he garment in front elevation with one of the flaps closed but not tied, the other flap open and also showing the tying means untied.
Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The garment which forms the subjectmatter of this application is shown conventionally at 10and indicated as of the usual and ordinary .knitted fabric having sleeves 11 secured thereto in any usual and ordinary manner. The front of the body portion of the garment is curved upwardly as indicated at 12 being secured adjacent the arm pits to the sleeves and with the back of the garment brought over either integral or by uniting in any approved means at the shoulder line Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing Washington, D. C.
13 to produce flaps 14 and 15. Centrally of the curved upper part of the body portion a ribbon or other tie 1G is secured centrally adjacent the upper edge in any approved manner as by sewing and the flaps 14 and 15 are respectively provided with openings of button-hole construction indicated at 17 and 18 through which the ties are inserted when the flaps are folded down to closed position and after being inserted through such button-hole openings are tied, as indicated at Fig. 1.
It will be apparent that the position of the ties and the f'laps 14E and 15 are such as to support t-he upwardly curved top of the upper portion 12 and that the position of the tie centrally of such upwardly curved portion will hold the flaps 14 and 15 properly closed at the middle. It is also apparent that the flaps are longer than sufficient to cover the edge of the upwardly curved portion in normal position to prevent the formation of an opening when the garment' stretches from wear. It is also apparent as shown that the outer edges of the flaps 14; and 15 at the arm-pit line overlap the upper edge of the top of the body portion to prevent the parts separating as described.
That I claim is A body garment comprising a main portion extending on a convex line upwardly from the bottom of the arm-pits to substantially the neck line, and side fiaps extending in convex curved lines from substantially the arm-pits to the center and meeting the center of the upwardly extending body portion substantially at the neck line, a tie cord secured to the center ot the upwardly extending body portion and positioned to pass through eyelets formed in the inner ends of the flaps and tie substantially at the neck line.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WALTER L. SIEIVE'RS.
