ROLLING FLANGED BARS. (Application filed Nov. 5, 1898.)
(No Model.)
WITNESSES INVENTOR UNITED STATES ANDREW MORRISON, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
ROLLING FLANGED BARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 622,967, dated April 11,1899. Application filed November 5,1898. SeiialNo. 695,544. (No an.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ANDREW MORRISON, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rolling Flanged Bars, 01": which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figures 1 and2 are front elevations of rolls containing passes shaped in accordance with my invention.
In the drawings, 1, 2, and 3 represent thefirst successive passes in which a blank is formed, having side flanges a a, projecting at an angle to the body, and a body I), which is curved or bent in the same direction as the flanges. In the succeeding passes 4, 5, and 6 the plate and flanges are thinned in crosssection and the flanges are gradually brought to the right-angled position shown in pass 6, the body still retaining its curved or bent form. In the succeeding passes 7, 8, and 9 the body of the plate is flattened and the sur-v plus metal is forced out laterally, so as to widen the plate and form side extensions which project beyond the flanges, the flanges being held in place and prevented from moving out during this widening process.
The flanges may, if desired, be moved-in during the Widening of the plate and may also be inset from the side edges before the widening of the plate.
The advantages of myinvention result from the bowing or bending of the plate-body in the direction of the flanges, the surplus metal being thus provided, which is forced out, so
as to widen the plate beyond the flanges.
Many variations in the form and dimensions of the bar and its flanges may be made without departing from my invention, since I claim 1. In the manufacture of flanged bars, rolls having passes arranged to form a bar having side flanges and a body bent or bowed in the direction of the flanges, and passes arranged ANDREW MORRISON.
