Description

(NOMOGBL) 0 W HUBBARD MANUFACTURE OF AXES.
Patented Jan. 20, 1891 lNVENTOR.
WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES WV. HUBBARD, 0F PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
MANUFACTURE OF AXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 444.886, dated January 20, 1891.
Application filed October 11,1890. Serial No. 367,798. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES HUBBARD, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Axes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is a plan View of abar of steel rolled into proper form for the manufacture of my improved poll-blank. Fig. 2 is a vertical crosssection of the bar shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows the manner in which the severed blank is bent to form the aX-poll.
My invention consistsin a bar of steel rolled into a certain shape in cross-section, hereinafter described, and adapted when divided transversely to form blanks each of which when benttogether and welded constitutes an aX-poll having a finished eye or hole for the reception of the helve.
l-leretofore attempts have been made to make ax-polls in this manner; but the sections of the bars have been such that they have been difficult, if not impossible, of rolling and when rolled were not adapted to be shaped into a useful aX-poll.
The object of my invention is to overcome the defects of such prior expedients and to provide means by which aX-poll blanks can be made by rolling in a cheap and eflicient manner.
I first roll a bar of steel of the shape in crosssection shown in Fig. 2, having a thick middle portion 2 and side portions 3, which extend from the middle portion in opposite directions in substantially the same plane, one side of the bar being formed with plain or fiat portions 4 along the margin and with a curved surface between these flat portions and a concavity 5 on the inner side of the middle portion 2. Such bar of steel is easily rolled without extra labor or cost. lVhen it is so rolled, I cut it transversely into blanks, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. I then take a blank formed in this way and bend up its arms 3 toward each other, and when the flat portions 4 are brought in contact, as shown in Fig. 3, and welded, the aX-poll is completed. The section of the blank is such that the ax-poll is completely shaped by bending up the sides of the blank. To this end the concavity 5 is of material importance, because if it were not present the eye of the ax would be misshapen and would require special treatment to reduce it to proper form.
By modification of the shape of the head 2 the bar may be adapted to produce blanks for double-bitted axes or axes with heads of special shapes.
The advantages of my invention will be appreciated by those skilled in the art.
I claim A rolled bar substantially of the shape in cross-section shown in Fig. 2 and adapted to be divided into aX-poll blanks, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of October, A; D. 1890.
CHARLES IV. HUBBARD.
