Description

UNITED STATES PATENT GEEICE.
DAVID JENKINS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT |N PILES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,643, dated June 30, 1674; appiication filed July 14, 1873.
' To all whom it may concern:
' city and county ot' Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Piles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to whichv my invention appcrtains to fully understand, make, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specitication, in which- Figure 1 is an end View of the bar embodying my invention. Figs. 2,3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 show applications thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several igures.
, This invention consists of a fagot or pile composed of two or more bars, of the form and proportions hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the bar, which is constructed of the narrow part A', and enlarged part B, vforming an Lsl1aped piece, of which the lines c d e ot' one side coincide with the lines f g h of the other side, thus forming two right angles, C D. The part A in the direction of the line e h is one-half the thickness of the part B in the direction of the line f g, and each bar has a breadth equal to twice the breadth of the part B.
The bars will be of uniform size and shape, and, for the purposes of piles, may be arranged in a variety of forms.
The shoulders of the bars may be placed against each other, as in Fig. 3 5 or the narrow end of one bar placed against the shoulder of another bar, as in Fig. 4; or the narrow ends placed together, as in Fig. 5, and another bar located between the shoulders, after which the remainder of the pile will be built.
Another form is shown in Fig. 6, and it will be'noticed that in the several examples presented, the piles have increased in thickness and width, and may be still further increased by proper arrangement of the bars.
By these means, the joints in both vertical and horizontal directions will be broken, and the pile be found to be eiiicient, easily formed,
and without the necessity of a variety of dif'- ferent-shaped pieces, thus correspondingly effecting a saving in rolls, and producing superior results.
For T-shaped, headed, or angle pieces, the bars may be arranged as in Fig. 2.
In Fig. 7 an arrangement is shown for steel headed rails or bars, wherein the rectangular steel bar a is readily inclosed by the bars A, and protected from the ames.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A fagot or pile composed of two or more bars, of the form and proportions hereinbefore set forth.
The above signed by me this 31st day of March, 1873.
V DAVID JENKINS.
