GEORGE WVA SHINGTON MOORES, OF NEWV ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
HAM E-TUG BUCKLE,
SPECIFICATION forming art of Letters Patent No. 622,509, dated April 4, 1899.
Application filed May 6, 1898. Serial NOi 679,969- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WAsHINcToN MooREs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Hame-Tug Buckle, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to hame-tug buckles, the purpose being to devise a buckle which can be readily applied to a hame and which will admit of the end portion of the tug lying flat and which when in service will distribute the strain in such a manner as to withstand the pulling force without rupture or breakage.
For a full understanding of the merits and advantages of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying. drawings and the following description.
The improvement is susceptible of various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and to a full disclosure of the invention an adaptation thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the hame-tug buckle in operative relation. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the buckle. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the tongue. Fig, 4 is a plan view of the buckle-frame.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The buckle-frame is of oblong form and comprises side bars 1, an end bar 2, an intermediate divided bail or billet-loop 3, and crossbars 4 and 5, the latter being intermediate of the end bar 2 and the divided loop 3 and the cross-bar 4 intermediate of the opposite end of the buckle-frame and the part 3. The side bars 1 converge toward the end remote from the end bar 2 and are unitedbya cross-piece 5, having a notch 6 in its outer side. The tongue 7 is mounted upon the cross-bar 4 and operates through the divided loop 3 and engages with the cross-bar 5 and endbar 2. The tongue 7 is formed with a wing or extension 8,-which is adapted to be bent around the cross-bar 4 and form the pivotal or hinge con- .nection between the tongue and said cross bar. The tongue is extended beyond its hinge connection with the cross-bar 4 and is bent to provide a hook 9, which is adapted to engage with the iron or staple projecting from the hame. A shoulder 10 is formed adjacent to the extremity of the hook 9 and is adapted to engage with the inner side of the cross-piece 5* and supplement the action of the connection between the tongue and the cross-bar 4 in sustaining the pulling force, thereby materially strengthening the buckle. The shoulder 10 is depressed, forming a seat to receive the cross-piece 5, the connection between the tongue and the cross-bar 4 being sufficiently loose to permit of the tongue having a slight longitudinal movement, so as to permit the shoulder 10 clearing the cross-piece 5 when turning the tongue to apply or remove the hame tug or trace 11 therefrom.
The space between the shoulder 10 and the terminal of the bill of the hook 9 is normally closed by the side walls forming the notch 6, the latter providing for the operation of the tongue when turning it upon the cross-bar 4. The extremity of the hook 9 passes through the notch 6 when moving the free end of the tongue 7 away from the cross-bar 2 of the buckle-frame. hen the buckle is in service, the strain upon the hook portion 9 of the tongue holdsthe shoulder 10 against the inner side of the cross-piece 5, thereby preventing the free end of the tongue from moving away from the cross-bar 2 even though the end portion of the tug is not thrust through the loop 3. An additional securing means is provided for holding the free end of the tongue against the cross-bar 2 when the end portion of the tug is slipped through the loop 3 over the tongue, as indicated in Fig. 1. It will be observed that the free end portion of the tongue'engages with the cross-bar 5 and end bar 2, said cross-bar serving to brace the end portion of the tongue and prevent it giving way under abnormal strain.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. In abuckle,a frame, in combination with a tongue having pivotal connection with the frame, and having an ofistanding part to engage with the inner side of the proximal end frame-bar, and having the end portion ex I frame, of a tongue pivotally connected with the frame a short distance from an end thereof, and having a shouldered portion to engage with the inner side of the adjacent end framebar, substantially as and for the'purpose set forth. i
4. The combination with abuckle-frame, of a tongue having pivotal connection between its ends with the buckle-frame and having an end portion extended forming ahook and provided with a shoulder intermediate of the hook and pivotal connection between the tongue and frame to engage with the inner side of the adjacent end frame-bar, substantially as set forth. I
5. The combination with a buckle-framehaving a cross-bar near one end, of a tongue pivotally and loosely connected with said cross-bar to admit of the tongue having a limited longitudinal movement, and having an end portion extended and bent to form a hook, and having a shoulder intermediate of the hook and pivotal connection between the tongue and frame, said shoulder being depressed to form a seat to receive the inner side of the end bar adjacent to the hook, sub stantially as set forth.
6. The herein-described hamc-tug buckle,
comprising an oblong frame having intermediate cross bars and an end cross -piece notched in its outer side, and a tongue pivotally connected with the cross-bar adjacent to the notched cross-piece and having an end portion extended and bent to form a hook which is normally closed by the side walls forming the notch of the cross-piece, and having a shoulder intermediate of the hook and pivotal connection between the tongue and frame, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
