TWINE-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 622,063, dated March 28, 1899.
Application filed June '7, 1898. Serial No. 6 82,817. (No model.)
To all whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN T. MCDONALD, a citizen of the United States, residing in Geneva, in the county of Ontario, State of New York, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Twine-Outters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of twine or cord cutters adapted to be worn as a ring on the finger of the user, and has for its object to provide certain improvements in the construction of the same whereby the article as a whole may be cut or stamped out of a strip or sheet of suitable metal and then bent to the desired circular configuration and fastened in a secure but inexpensive manner.
My invention also embodies certain other minor novel details, as will be more definitely hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is aperspective View of my improved cutting-ring, the same being shown in the act of severing a cord or twine used to tie up a package. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of said ring. Fig. 3 is an enlarged front elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank before being bent into ring form.

To construct my improved cutting-ring I cut or stamp out of a strip or sheet of suitablemetal, preferably steel, a blank of substantially the configuration shown in Fig. 4, in which the body portion 1 preferably tapers toward each end on one side, as shown, and has formed at one end an angular projection 2, the outer corners of which are preferably rounded. The sharp angle 3 forms the cutting edge, the same being brought to a proper degree of sharpness by suitable grinding before the ring is formed. Near each end the blank is apertured at 4, and to form the ring it is only necessary to bend each end at sub stantially a right angle to the body portion, when by bending said body portion and bringing the bent projection 2 and the opposite bent end 5 together, so that the holes or apertures 4. register, the parts may be permathat the blank is tapered a little more toward the end 5 than toward the projection 2, which permits the edge of said end 5 to lie slightly back of the cutting edge 3 when the ring is formed, thus in no way interfering with the operation of said cutting edge.
The device is preferably worn on the first finger of the left hand between the second joint and knuckle and with the cutting edge 3 projecting toward the knuckle. By reference to Fig. 1 the cutting operation will be readily understood, for as there shown the twine to be severed is grasped between the thumb and first finger of the left hand and the free end brought around the projection 2, where it will contact with the cutting edge 3 and be instantly severed.
If desired the completed ring may be plated with nickel, silver, or other metal to improve its artistic appearance.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A cord or twine cutting finger-ring, cut or stamped from a fiat piece of metal, the meeting ends of which are bent at an angle to the body portion and fastened together, one of said meeting ends being formed into the cutting edge, substantially as set forth.
- 2. A cord or twine cutting finger-ring, cut
or stamped from a fiat piece .of metal, the meeting tapered ends of which are bent at an angle to the body portion and fastened together, one of said meeting ends being formed into the cutting edge, and the other end tapered more acutely than the cutting-edge end so as to lie back of said cutting edge when brought together and fastened, substantially as set forth.
