T- ALL WHOM IT'MAY CONCERN: m y
Be it known that I, O. O. CHAPMAN, ot' Seneca, in the county oi` Crawford, andState of Wisconsin, have i u i invented a new and improved Boring Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following `is 'al full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference'bcing had to the accompanying drawings, forming partof thisspeciiication; p y i, The nature ofmy invention consists in constructing a machine 'so that the felloes of carriages may be `bored rapidly and in the most perfect. and unerring manner. It more particularly consists in makin'gthe uprhght` p posts 'to -act as guides for the head block, the said posts being provided with gibs and the head block with slides] that tover`and work upon the gibs, so that the auger may be elevated or `lowered as thefnature of the work may require It-furthcr consists in making thepinion'on the mandrellof. the augervbit fast. It alsoconsists in the combination of movable carriage with the movable head block.- p
To enable others skilled in theart to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe itsconstruction i and operation. l i i i 4Figure l'is a top `plan view of my improvedrnachine 'for boring. Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing only a section of the head block from the line X.
Letters ot' like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
A is Va rectangular frame, made of wood of any suitable dimensions, mounted en and supported by proper. p i posts'B, *Gis aicarriage or table, locatedupon the top ofjhejrernelA, whichis made so that it canmovc hack,` i and forth longitudinally with the frame on gibs and slide vprovided for that purpose.` D D are two upright" C posts, the lower ends oi' which are secured to the 'top and at the end of the frame A, and` `the tops of the` said posts are connected by a crosspieceE, a. portion of which is removed for the purpose of showingthc `top of the post D. Upon the inside of thc said posts, and .facing cach other, are gibs, F upon `which is located `anc i -Works the head block or frame Gr. To the upper cross-piece of thei'rame G'is a bearing, in which runs a drive wheel, H, the teeth of which are upon the inside of the rinrof the wheel, which mesh `into and drive a corre- 4 spondiug pinion, I, which is secured,to the. shaft J, which has bearings in the head block or frame G. Tothe` top of thc frame Gr is a screw, K, which is provided with 4a crank, L. This screw, which is operated by the crank for the purpose of elevating and lowering the head block or frame G, in which is the auger M1 i N is .n lever, attached to a standard, S, 'by a pivot-bolt; At the front end of the said lever is afoot, O, for theipurpose of holding down the work that is put into the machine. To this4 lever N' is attached a rod, P, that extends down through the table and connects `with a treadle, Q, which may be secured in'any` desired position by the ratchet'R. T is also a lever, connectedv to the frame by a pivotbolt at U, and connected to thetable by the p rod'W. This lever T is for the purpose of moving the carriage orA table Cback and forward to thelbit or auger.` y Y` is a. crank, attached to the shaft of the wheel H `for the purpose of operating the auger. p The operation of my. improved machine is simple and perfect, andpeculiarly adapted lto boring felloes for wagons and carriages and other vehicles, and consists in placing the concave or inside of the felloe to the auger and letting it bear against the pins b b, which are located near the front end o f the table c`; then, by turning the crank Y through the medium of the large wheel H", a rapid motion is imparted to the auger `As the auger enters the work it is'fed by drawing the table steadily up to the auger `by means of y the` lever T. It will understood that the work may be held 'down and made fast in its position` by means of thetreadle Q operating d on the lever N and foot M is a hole made in 'the re'ar end of the table for the purpose of holding or securing i a wheel on the table, for the purpose of boring the tenou` on the end of the spoke. l
Having tlius described myinv-ention, what I cla-im, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of theUnited States, is i i i i The head block G, hearing the wheel H, pinion I, movable tablel C, lever T,'treadle Q, rod P, and lever N, i when constructed, arranged, and operating substantially'as herein'set forth. i 3
o. o. CHAPMAN.
