UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE WV. SI-IAILER, OF WELLINGTON, NEW ZEALAND.
DEVICE FOR ATTACHING FEATHERS TO HATS.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 621,770, dated March 21, 1899. Application filed March 14, 1898. Serialllo. 678,849. (No model.)
Feathers and the Like to Hats, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention consists of an improved device or means for attaching feathers, plumes, or other trimmings to hats and the like, the
object being to enable feathers, plumes, and,
other trimmings to be readily removed from hats and the like when required without the necessity of sewing or permanently attaching In carrying out this object I, employ a fastener or holder consisting of two parts. One part is secured to the hat by any convenient means, such as sewing or by prongs, and the other part is attached to the feather, plume, or trim'ming by any convenient means, such as sewing and the like. "When it is desired to wear the feather, plume, or trimming, the part carrying same is caused to engage in the part of the fastener attached to the hat or the like. The connection between the two parts may be of any suitable form, such as a spring-catch.
It will be seen that when packing a hat the plumes may be readily removed, thus preventing damage to the same, as in the case of a hat in which the feather is sewed or permanently attached it cannot be readily removed, whereas by my invention the feather, plume, or trimming can be readily removed from the hat or placed in position, as required. Referring to the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a socket-piece; Fig. 2, a perspective view of clip for carrying the feather or trimming, and Fig. 3 a side elevation showing the device in position on a hat.
The socket-piece a is secured to the hat I) by means of a tongue 0 or any other convenient and well-known method of fixing, The plume or trimming is attached to the perforated plate cl by sewing or other convenient means, this plate d, carrying the spring-piece 6, having the enlargements or bends f for engaging in the apertures 9 formed in the socketpiece. By causing the ends e of the springpiece e to approach each other the enlargements or bends f will be removed from the apertures g and the parts can then be separated. The dotted lines It indicate the plume or feather upon the hat I).
It will be seen that although I have shown one construction of my invention for purpose of illustration there are various modifications ming is secured; spring-catches upon same which engage in apertures in the socket-piece aforesaid for the purpose of securing the feather, plume or trimming to the hat.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand. this 13th day of January, 1898. V
