AUTOMATIC DOOR-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 620,761, dated March 7, 1899.

Be it known that I, HARRIS I-I. FASSETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the countyof San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Checks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to improvements in door-checks, and has for its object to provide a novel construction of device of this character to hold the door closed against accidental opening and to prevent the jarring incidental to the sudden closing of the door; and it consists in certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts hereinafter more fully described, and specifically set forth in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, Figure 1 is a plan view of the roller and its casing. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the metal contact-plate; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of a portion of a door and doorjamb, showing my invention applied thereto.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a door which is hinged to a doorjamb in the usual manner. (Not shown.) The opposite door-jamb 3 is provided with a groove or recess 4, in which a roller-casing 5 is adapted to fit. This casing consists, preferably, of a cylindrical body portion closed at both ends and open at the front and provided with oppositely-projecting side flanges 6, having openings 3 for the passage of screws to secure it to the door-jamb. The shaft 7 is cylindrical in form and is adapted to be inserted into the casing through a circular opening of equal diameter in one head 8 thereof and is formed at its opposite end with a square boss or projection 7, adapted to fit Within a square opening in the other head 8 of said case. The shaft is thus fixed and does not revolve. An elastic roll or tube 9 is loosely mounted on the said shaft and is adapted to revolve on the same, and this roll is of such diameter that the outer side thereof projects slightly beyond the outer open face of the case, the relation of the parts being such that the elastic roll or tube is adapted to yield and turn on its axis when compressed against and by its own elasticity to resume its normal position when such pressure is released.
A contact-plate 1O fits within a recess 11 on the inner edge of the door and is provided with a dished or concaved center portion 11 and side flanges 12, provided with openings 3 for the insertion of screws to secure it to the door.
The operation is as follows: When the door is closed, the side flanges of the contact-plate carried thereby encountering the elastic roll will press the same inward, thereby enabling the door to be closed, and when the dished orconcaved central portion of the contact-plate is coincident with the said roll the latter resumes its normal position by its own elasticity and seats within the said concavity. In this position the side flanges of the contactplate abut against the opposite sides of the roll and are in close contact therewith, the result being that the door is securely held and cannot be accidentally opened by a draft or wind, while it may be readily released by a forcible pull.
It will be seen that my invention provides a door-check which is simple and inexpensive in construction, possesses durability, and is capable of firmly holding the door closed against accidental opening by gusts of wind and also provides against the door slamming when suddenly closed.
\Vhile I prefer to make use of a casin g within which the shaft and elastic roll or tube is fitted, the same may be dispensed with and in place thereof any suitable means may be employed for rigidly securing the shaft within the recess in the door-jamb. It is also apparent that the position of the parts may be reversedthat is, the roll or tube and shaft may be'secured within a recess in the edge of the door and the contact-plate 10 within a recess in the door-jamb.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-- l. The combination with a door and its j amb which latter is formed with a recess, of a shaft mounted in end bearings in said recess and held from lateral movement, an elastic tubular roll loosely mounted on said shaft, so as to rotate thereon and project beyond the face of the jamb, and a concaved face on the door into which said elastic r011 seats when the door is closed.
2. In a door-check, the combination of a casing comprising a semicylindrical body portion closed at both ends and open at the front and provided with oppositely-projecting side flanges having screw-openings, a cylindrical shaft projecting through an opening in one end of the case and provided with a square boss to enter a square socket or opening in the other end of said case, an elastic r011 mounted on said shaft and of greater diameter than the shaft and having its outer surface adapted to project beyond the line of the case, and a contact-plate provided with a central cavity or inbent portion and side flanges provided with openings for the insertion of fastening-screws, all combined, arranged and operating, substantially as herein shown and described.
