T0 @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC C. GRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Fayette, in the county of Tippecanoe and State of Indiana., have invented new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the followino1 is a specifica-tion.
This invention re ates to a hinge and particularly to 'a hinge which is especially adapted for use in connection with closure members which are to swing in both directions.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an inexpensive hinge of this character which can be more easily applied vand is less likely lto get out of Order than are the hinges now in use and is so constructed that the hinge will automatically act to restore the closure member to its norma-l position when the closure member has been opened.
Another object of the invention is to provide the hinge wherein the leaf for connection with the closure member is in the form of a yoke on the arms of which are lugs, which through their engagement with a spring pressed bar -carried by the other leaf of the hinge not only normally prevent casual swinging movement of the closure member, but act as levers to be acted upon by the bar when moving the closure member to a position to obstruct the opening in which the closure member is mounted.
A further object of the invention is to so construct the leaf of the hinge which is in the form of a yoke that anti-friction devices may be used in connection with the hinge.
1With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel combina-- tion and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, although no restriction is necessarily made to the precise details of construction therein shown, as changes, alterations, and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a portion of a door way wherein the door is connected with the door frame by a hinge ponstructed in accordance with the invenlon.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section upon an enlarged scale on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a perspective View of one of the leaves of the hinge.
Fig. 5 is a similar view of the other leaf of the hinge.
Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the spring pressed bar carried by one of the leaves of the hinge.
Fig. 7 is a. detail perspective view of the portion of one vof the hinge leaves showing a modification of the invention.
Like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throi'ighout the several views in the drawings.
Referring no-w t0 the drawings in detail the letter A designates a. portion' of a door frame wherein a door B is connected with a frame C by the hinge which is constructed in accordance with my invention and not only permits the door B to swing in both directions but automatically acts upon the door to restore `the same to normal closed position after the door has been opened.
The hinge includes leaf member which comprises a rectangular shaped plate 12 which is retained within a recess in the frame C by screws 13. rIhe plate 12 has formed upon one side thereof a central cylindrical housing 14 which extends within a mortise in the frame C and is eXteriorly threaded for a portion of its length. Threadedly engaged with the housing 14: to permit its adjustment thereon is a cap 15 in the closed end of vwhich is formed a central opening alining with a similar opening 17 inthe plate 12. f y
Extending within the housing 14 through the opening in the cap 15 is a bary '18 having formed thereon at one end an enlarged head 19 which is arranged Within the opening 17 in the plate 12 and extends beyond the outer face thereof. The bar 18 is yieldably held against sliding movement in the housing 1a by a coiled expansion spring 2O which is mounted upon the bar to bear against the head 19 and the closed end of the cap 15. The tension of the spring 2O on the bar 18 may be regulated through the adjustment of the cap 15 on the housing 1/1.
Formed on the outer face of the plate 12 and arranged upon opposite sides of the opening 17 are a pair of lugs 21 with each lug provided With a circular head 22 in which is formed a ball race 23.
The other leaf of the hinge comprises a yoke 24 between the arms 25 and 26 of Which extends the door B which is connected With the arms of the yoke by screws 27. The yoke 25 serves as a closure member for a recess 29 in the closure B in which are received the circular heads 22 on the lugs 21 on the outer face of the plate 12, said lugs extending Within slots 32 in the closed end of the yoke which slots extend into the arms 25 and 26. Arranged in the race Ways 23 are bearing balls 34 Which are engaged by Webs 33 formed integral with the arms of the yoke 2st and act as braces therefor. A hinge pin 35 passes through suitable openings in the heads 22 and the Webs 33 and the housing 40 of the yoke and acts as a pintle about which the yoke 24 may turn.
The head 19 on the bar 18 extends into the recess 29 and also through a central slot 36 in the closed end of the yoke 24e and into the housing of the yoke 40, Fig. 3, and is normally held in Contact With a pair of projections or lugs 37 on the arms of the yoke by the spring 20.
rlhrough the provision of the spring pressed bar 18 and the lugs 37 on the leaves of the hinge it is apparent with reference to the drawings that the closure member B is normally held against casual swinging movement by the bar 18, While when the door has been moved to open position a lug 37 will act as a lever to be acted vupon by the bar 18 for restoring the door to a position in which it will obstruct the opening in which it is mounted.
By virtue of the bar 18 in one leaf or member of the hinge being provided with the horizontally-disposed head 19, and the other leaf or member of the hinge being equipped With lateral lugs 37 in engagement with the face of said head 19, the head is enabled to exert considerableleverage and promptly close the door. It will also be noted that the disposition of the head 19 in the housing 40 of the door leaf or member, and the extension of the pintle 35 through said housing, assure the hinge leaves or Leganes members being strongly retained in proper relative positions for eiiicient action of the springbacked head against the lateral lugs 37.
In the modified form of the invention disclosed in Fig. 7 in the drawingsV the leaf, or yoke 24 is identical in construction with that disclosed in the preferred form of the invention with the exception, that in the modified form of the invention lugs 37 are bifurcated and have mounted in the slots therein rollers 38 Which bear on the head 19` on the bar 18.
From the foregoing description taken in connection With the accompanying drawings it is apparent that a hinge for the purpose set forth has been provided Which is easy to apply, durable in use, and inexpensive of manufacture.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new, is
1. In a hinge, the combination of a member having a horizontally slotted plate, an abutment carried by and spaced from the rear of the plate and forwardly-extending horizontally-disposed lugs, a bar having a head movable in the slot of the plate and also having a portion guided in the said abutment thereof, a spring surrounding the bar and interposed between the head and said abutment, a second member having means receiving the said lugs of the rstnamed member and superimposed thereon and lateral portions opposed to the face of the head on the bar, and a pintle extending through the members and connecting the same together.
