WZ ZWZ nromvsrS v NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS SOHUCK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
NECKTlE-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 620,677, dated March '7, 1899.
Application filed January 26,1898. Serial No. 667,959. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS SCHUCK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, (Brooklyn,) county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Necktie-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, ref= erence being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an improvement in necktie-fasteners; and its object is to provide a simple means of attachment whereby the tie may be attached to the collar of the wearer without the intervention of the collarbutton and without the necessity of attaching neckbands to the tie, heretofore utilized as a retaining element in such devices.
The primary feature of the invention is the employment of a spring-clip attached to the rear side of the bow.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the spring-clip. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a perspective View from the rear of an ordinary bowtie, showing the preferred method of attaching the spring-clip.
In the practice of my invention I employ a base-plate A, preferably of sheet metal, said base-plate being provided with a series of holes 0. CL of a suitable size to accommodate the required number of threads used in sew ing it to the bow B. A rectangular slot 0 in the upper edge of said base-plate A forms a clearance between the legs D D of said baseplate, said legs D D being adapted to span the collar-button of the wearer. The upper ends of said legs are preferably serrated and curved slightly outward, thus forming the inner members 61 d of-ithe clip. A tongue E, formed integrally with the said base-plate, is
curved upwardly and over the bridge f of the spring-actuated clip F. This clip is formed of a single piece of metal and embodies the bridge f, the downwardly-extended arms f f, and the upwardly-extending arms f f,
the bights f f being open and forming eyes adapted to receive the ends of the spring G. The free ends of said upwardly-extended arms f f terminate in the flattened jaws f f, the extremities of which are preferably serrated and bent inwardly, as at f thus forming the movable member of the clip. Said clip is held normally closed by means of the spring G, consisting of the loop g, adapted for con= tact with the base-plate A, the coils g g, surrounding the bridge f, one on either side of the tongue E, and the arms g 9 said arms terminating inthe upwardly-projecting spurs g g adapted to be held in the bights f f by the walls thereof, thereby preventing lateral motion of the spring. The clip is preferably secured to the tie by means of thread passed through the holes a and the rear portion of the bow B.
In operation the clip is opened and the legs D D inserted under the collar, one leg on either side of the collar-button. The spring actuated arms are then allowed to close, grasping the collar and preventing the tie from becoming loosened from said collar.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In an improved necktie-fastener,of the class described, a spring-clip embodying the baseplate A provided with legs D D and curved tongue E, a movable clamp consisting of the metal arms f f having the bights f f and bridge f, said bridge being confined by means of the curved tongue E, and a spring adapted to actuate said clamp, said spring embodying the loop g adapted for fixed contact with the base-plate, the coils g g surrounding the said bridge f, and the arms 9 g and spurs 9 y said spurs adapted to be confined within the Walls of the bights f f substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 22d day of January, 1898.
