Description
` Auger-Bits to Bit-Stocks;
UNITED STAT-ns PATENT OFFICE- N J OES' H. NELLIS, OF RICBMONDVILLE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHING BITS TO BRACES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 62,057, dated February 12, 1867- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. NELLIs, of Richmondville, in the county of Schoharie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Connecting and do hereby declare that the following -is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the 'accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this speccatOn.,
In the annexed drawings, A represents the auger-bit, which is of the ordinarymanufacy ture, but having its shank D made somewhat y Y longer than the usual length. A groove is made Within this shank. into which is inserted thel spring C, and which is rmly secured at the top portion of the shank. This spring distends from the bottom of the shank, where is made a square notch in the spring, which of itself forms two shoulders. It will be observed that this spring has a small pad at its 3 end, which is below the end of the' shank, and
below the bit-stock when the same is cony nected to the auger. This pad is to operate the spring, so as to detach the stock when re- I quired.
B represents the bit-stock,'which, by means of its square opening, is placed over the bitshank AD. Xrepresents a small opening near the bottom of the stock, and into which the spring catches. The auger is detached from the stock by merely pressing the spring and slipping it out of the opening.`
, When the stock is attached to the-auger the two are iirmly and securely held together by means of the spring andvopening X between the points a to z. This device greatly sirnplies the bit-stock, and holds thetwo together when in boring, as well as when the ,same is vbeing withdrawn. Having thus. fully described my invention, what I claim as new,and desire to secure by JOHN` H. `NELLIs.
