To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN GASTON AIKIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stockton, in the county of Baldwin and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bill-Files; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to bill-files of that class comprising a base-plate and a wire or wires supported thereby and having the adjacent ends thereof arranged to be separated to permit of the placing of a bill or other paper on the file and when closed forming a practically continuous wire.

The present invention has for its object to provide an improved bill-file of this class I having its upper arm constituting a cutter or punch and formed with a coil which serves to normally keep the loop closed to force the upper arm of the wire down to cause the paper to be punctured, and also as a stop to limit the movement of the papers on said upper arm and prevent their coming in contact with the supporting-hook or becoming caught in the space between the upper arm and the upper end of the tubular portion at their junction with each other.

The novelty resides in the details of construction, all as more fully hereinafter described, shownin the drawings, and then particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation, partly in section, showing the file attached to the wall. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the file; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the file, showing some bills located thereon.

The file consists of the base-plate 1, said base-plate being attached to the wall by means of the screws 2 2 and the hook 3, the hook passing through the perforation i at the upper end of the plate and the screws or other securing devices passing through the lower perforations of the plate.

The perpendicular central axis of the plate 1 is provided with the elevated section 5, the

said section being open at its upper and lower ends. A spring-rod 6 passes under the section 5 and is secured therein by any suitable means. The lower end of the rod 6 is bowed down and then extends up and terminates in a sharp point 7. The upper end of the rod 6 is formed into the coil 8", and is bowed up, and then extends down, and is provided at its end with a recess 8, said recess being centrally located in the end, the edge of the recess 8' being sharpened, as at 9. The recess 8 is adapted to receive the sharp point 7 of the lower portion of the rod 6, and when the said point 7 is located in the. recess 8, as shown in Fig. 1, the rod 6 substantially forms. a continual loop. The tension of the coil 8 retains the recess 8 firmly in engagement with the sharp point 7.

In placing the bills on the file the upper portion of the rod 6 is grasped and the said upper portion is swung up, the coil 8" compensating for the movement. The bill is then placed over the sharp point 7, and the upper portion of the rod 6 is permitted to descend,

In placing a number of bills on the file the operation is simply repeated. To remove a particular bill, supposing that it should be near the middle of the bunch, the preceding bills are passed up on the upper bowed section of the rod 6, as shown in Fig. 3. Then the bill to be removed is passed toward the point '7, and the upper bowed section of the rod 6 is elevated and the bill is taken 0%. After removup on the upper bowed section of the rod 6 will fall down and assume their proper places on the lower bowed section of'the rod 6.
