Be it known that I, HJB. SMITH, of Eureka, Woodford county, and State of Illinois, have invented anew and improved Plough Attachment; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side sectional view of my invention, taken in the line 90 :c, fig. 2.

Thisinvention relatesto a new and improved sulky-attachmcnt for ploughs, and it consists in a novel con. struction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby any ordinary plough may, with a very moderate expense, be converted into a sulky-plough, or have a sulky-attachmcnt applied to, it, and one which will admit of the driver having complete control over the plough.

A represents the beam of anordinary plough, B the plough attached to the beam, and C the handle attached to the beam. These parts may be of usual construction, and therefore do not require a minute description. I) represents a frame, which is mounted on two wheels, E E, the wheel E being fitted on a fixed arm, and the wheel E fitted on an arm, a, which is on a crank, 12, attached to the frame D. The arm a is connected by a link, 0, to the lower end of-a lever, F, which is secured by a fulcrum-pin, d, to the frame A. This lever, F, extends upward by the side of the drivers seat G on the frame D, so that the driver, by actuating the lever F from his seat G, may raise or lower the side of the frame D, to which the wheel Eis attached, and always keep the frame D in a horizontal position, and compensate for the low position of the wheel F, whichruns in the furrow. H is a clip, which is attached at one side to a curved bar,'I, securcdto one side of the frame D, the other side of the clip being attached to a diagonal bar, J, in the frame D. Thebeam A is fitted loosely in the clip H,

and the beam has pins, 2, passing through it in front of and at the rear of the clip, in order to prevent the longitudinal movement'of the beam therein, (see fig. 1.) To the under side of the clip H there is attached a bar, K, which extends forward underneath the beam, and is attached at its front end of the plough beam, the double-tree being attached to said clcvis. This bar, K, is attached to the under part of the clip by a bolt, ta which connects the lower ends of the baud b which embraces the beam. Instead of the bar K, a chain may be used, and the same effect produced. This bar, K, or the chain, which is an equivalent therefor, is an important feature of the invention; for, by the application of the clip and the bar or chain, the carriage and plough are kept, in a measure, separate, each having an independent draught, but still working in, unison, and the utmost or all necessary freedom is allowed the plough, the cariage portion not being allowed ,to interfere with its proper movement or adjustment in any way whatever. The plough beamhas a semicircular bar, M, attached to its upper surface, and to the centre and highest point on this bar a clip, N, is'attached by a pivot-bolt,f, which admits of the clip N turning like a swivel. O is a tongue, which is fitted into the clip N,and is secured therein by a bolt, 9, which passes transversely throughthe tongue and clip. This tongue extends back over the frame D, within convenient reach of the driver on his seat G. This tongue admits of the device being backed without difliculty, and also of .the plough being raised and lowered with facility, as well as the devicebeing guided to the right or left. The bar K admits of the draught being applied in such a manner as to allow the utmost freedom to the plough, allowing the land-side to run over rough and uneven ground. The device is extremely simple as a whole, and may be constructed at a small cost.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The tongue 0, attached to a curved bar M, on the plough beam A, by means of a clip N, in such a manner that a universal joint connection will be obtained, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The attaching of the plough beam A to the frame D, through the medium of the clip H attached to the frame, and having the plough beam fitted in it, substantially as described.

3. The adjustable wheel E, fitted on the crank-arms a, and adjusted by the lever F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. i

4. The bar K, oran equivalent chain, attached to the clipH, and extending along underneath the plough beam, and connected at its front end to the clevis at the front end of the plough beam, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
