Description

J. PIERCE.
WhelfPlow.
Patented -Nov. l8. 1864.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
JABISH PIERCE, OF WYANE'I, ILLINOIS.
PLOWING-MACHINE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 44,969, dated November 8, 1864.
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, JAEIsn PIERCE, of Wyanet, in the county of Bureau and State of Illinois, have invented anew and Improved Machine for Flowing; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact dcscription ot the same, reference being lhad to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which-- Figure l is a plan of my improved machine,
and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same.
Similar letters or" reference indicate correspondin g parts in the several figures.
The object ot' this invention is Jto provide means whereby weak or infirm persons are enabled to cultivate the soil in au eiective manner without being subjected to the fatigue which results from the management of the ordinary plows; and to this end the invention relates to a novel method of employing a cornmon plow in connection with a wagon-frame,
v bar, C, hrmiy secured upon the axle D. In
order to form a more secure attachment and at the same time allow the front part of the machine to readily turn, the bar C is provided "with an opening, c', through which the forward end of the frame A passes, as shown in Fig. 2. At its rear end the frame A rests upon the axle D', to which it may 'be made fast in any suitable manner. E represents the tongue, the bifurcated end of which isheld or secured between the bar C and axle D by bolts e e.
F F represent the various parts of a plow, which, being of common construction, need no specific description. This plow is placed between the hounds A A in the manner shown, and it is connected tothe forward axle, D, by means of clevises Gr G', which are securely attached respectively to the plow-beam F and the axle D pins g g and coupled together by the clavie-ring l2. The plow, being thus applied to the machine, is supported in proper position oy pins or project-ions f j'.
H is a lever fulcrumed upon a frame, I, by meansot a bolt, h, upon which the lever may be freely turned. This lever is connected to the plow by means o'f an adjustable link, J, and elevis J and it may be retained in a depressed condition by a pin, J2, projecting inward from the vertical piece K, which rests upon the axle D.
L L represent supports, which are joined to the hounds A and project divergingly therefrom in a backward direction, so as to give the proper elevation to a seat, M, mounted upon their rear ends. This seat is so located that when the driver occupies the same he may, without changing his normal sitting positiou, readily reach the lever H and plowhandles F. y A
As a general thing the plow will need no particular attention from the attendant while the machine is iu operation; but when it becornes necessary to impart any independent movement to the plow this may be done with little exertion by means of the lever Fi, hytnrning which the plow may be moved laterally to avoid obstructions, or eleva ted when it is desired to suspend. the work. The plowhandles may be advantageously employed when circumstances require an instantaneous or very rapid adjustment ot' the plow;
By slightly modifyingthe tongue E the frame A may be attached directly thereto,l and l1 further propose to einploy, ins'tead of the o wheel, B, a roller which may extend inward a sudicient distance to pass over the turrow made by the plow and operate to crush the clods.
The plow with all its appurtenances is adapted to be detached from the frame in order that the latter may be employed for other purposes.
Having thus described my invention, what I elamas new therein, and desireto secure by elevis J', and pin k, the whole heing'employed Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of lche plow F F', olevspecified. .ises G G', and axle D with the frame A, axle J ABISH PIERCE. D', seat M, and wheels B,suhst antially as and Witnesses: vfor the purposes sel'J forth. I. H. CASS,
2. The combination of the lever H, link J, W. A. MERCER.
in the manner 4and for the purposes herein
