Description
@uiten gioire detriti @fitta DANIELR. PRATT, or WORCESTER., MASSAQEUSETTS, ASSIGNOR To J.
. MARCUS RICE, or THE SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 61,864, dated I'eJrztaH-JY 5,
IMPROVEMENT IN SPIKE MAGHINES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, DANIEL R. PRATT, of Worcester, in the county of Worcester, in the State of- Massiv chsetts, have inventeda new and improvedmodeol' forming Heads uponbars of metal by means of a. revolving `nnrotnting machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, refer e` ce being had to the accompanying drawings and to theletters of reference marked thereon.
lhe nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of disks or flange-face plates on two revolving or ro ating shafts, and on the upper one, as seen in Figures II and III, is placed a pocket to receivetheheading dies fo forming the upper portion of the head to be made on the blank or bar, and onV the lower shaft is placed a` or face plate, with pockets for the dies which are placed on the d-isk of a revolving wheel obliquely across the radial line of the wheel, as seen in Fig. III, to hold the bar or blank to be headed inthe dies on an oblique lin" across the radial line of the wheel.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed'to describe its construe tion'and operation. v Y I I make amachine with two shafts, geared together so `as to revolve in opposite directions, with two gears, as seen in Fig. I'I, o; the two end gears may be dispensed with by using the driving Vgears in the middle of the frame, and thereby make both ends of the shafts to receive the heading arrangement, and then I place on the shafts the disks or wheels with their pockets to receive the heading and holding dies. The pockets on the disk of the lower shaft arev made tapering on the inside to conform to the shape ofthe dies, iwith a shoulder to receive the pressure of the heading dies to'keep theln from being forced through the pockets informing the head on the blanks. The holding dies are niade tapering on the outside to conform to thepockets, so as to produce a squeezing grip on the blank while being headed, which has a shoulder on it to resten that of the pockets after beingforeed to it by closing the die tightly on the bar or blank by means of the two tapering surfaces of the pockets and holding dies, as seen in Fig. III. The holding dies are divided 'and hinged,` and provided with handles,
as seen in detached view, letter B.. The shape of the lower portion of the head to bernadeisformed in the top. of the holding dies, and when put into the pockets it will be seen that it is held on an angle obliquely across the i radial line of the wheel or disk while in the die to be hea'ded, which is very important in producing heads on bars of metal by the means of two revolving wheels or rolls, sothat when the end .of the blank comes in contact with the heading die the pressure of the latter will be in a line coincident with the axisof the blank so as to stave it np or upset it, until the die is completely filled before the head is formed. Different holding dies, of
rvarying Obliquity, may be used to vary the position of the blank, if desired.-
v .What Ielai'm as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is l 1.' The divided holding die B, hinged together and made with handles, and of tapering shape from top to bottom, with a. shoulder on the outer surface.
2. In combination with the holding die B, I claiin a revolving pocket made fast to one of the revolving wheels, with a corresponding tapering surface on the inside, and a.' shoulder to receiveV the pressure of the heading diejwhile the head is vbeing formed on the bar of metal. A V
3. In machinesfor heading bars of metals in Awhich Vrolls are used, substantially as herein described, I claim placing the blank at such vanangle in the die' that when the end ot" the :blank or bar comes in contact with the heading die the pressure will be in aline coincident with the axis of the blank, or nearly so, as set forth.
DANIEL R.' PRATT.
