Description

@eine tete'stwt @ffice JOSEPH E. omer, or GHARLESTOWN,MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 64,202, dated April 30, 1867.`
IMPROVED RIVET MACHINE.
Q'Llge .rlgrhnle Infant in in time xitos grtnit mit uniting part nf its smic.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH E. CRISP, of Charlestown, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful improvements -in Rivet Machines; and I declare the'following to be a full, true, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure l represents a plan view of my machine.
Figure 2 represents a side view of the same.
Letter A represents the main sha-ft of the machine, by which the different wheels are set in motion by means of the handle B. Attached Vtothe shaft A is the wheel C, which is provided with a number of cogs or teeth, which are so placed that when the wheelrevolves, they catch in the corresponding cogs of the wheel D, causing it to revolve also. Immediately over the shaft of the wheel D is placed the roller E, in such a manner that when the shaft revolves the roller turns also. In each of the boxes F and H is placed a plunger, J and K, for the purpose of forming the rivets; and to each of the plungers is attached an upright spring, U U, so as to give them a reciprocating motion. Upon the extremities of the plungers J and K 'there are rod-like projections, in which are placed dies oi' suitable shape and size to form the head and point respectively. Between the boxes F and' H is placed the rotary die Gr, which has a number of perforations so as to receive the wire as it passes 'from the feed motion I through the box F, and is made to revolve bymeans of the toothed wheel R. That side of the bor; F next to thc rotary die is intended to represent a steel plate, which forms, with the die, a pair of shears for the purpose of cutting the wire ofthe required length. Letter L represents awheel, lwhich has a'number of circular cogs upon its periphery, and wedge-shaped projections upon its inner surface, for the purpose of operating the two plungers K and P in the lo'x II. These plungers bothworlcat the same time, the one being operated by the cogs, and the other by the wedges. Letter N represent-s an elongated spring, one end of which rest-s upon the lower end of the hammer M, for the .purpose of retaining it in one position, while the other is secured to the frame S. Letter O represents a cam-wheel, against which an arm or projection of the hammer M presses, so that when the wheel revolves, a reciprocating motion is given to the hammer, for the purpose of heading and pointing the rivets.
The mode of operation is. as follows: After the wire has passed into the rotary die Gr, from the feed motion I, the die revolves, cutting the wireoff, and brings it opposite the two plungers .I and K, where it isto be formed. As the wire is brought opposite the two plungers, the wheel L, in revolving, presses the plunger K forcibly against the die G, while the pointing tool upon the end of the plunger forces the wire towards the box F, leaving enough of the material extending beyond the die G'to form the head of the rivet. The wire is now held in the die G, between the two plungers J and K, when a blow from the hammer M points and heads it at the same time. l I
The rivet after being formed remains in the die G until it comes opposite the plunger P,when it is forced from the die towards the box F, where it falls through the frame S into the receptacle for that purpose.
Having thus described my invention, what I. claim, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the intermittently revolving die-disk G with the plungers .I and K, arranged and operating as described.
I2. In combination with the subject-matter ofthe first claim, I claim the plunger P.
3. In combination with. the plungers .I-.and K, I claim the series of cams on thev face of the wheel L,l and the hammer M.
4. In combing with the intermittently revolving die-disk G, I claim the plungers J, K, and P, and the stubs on the periphery of the wheel L. f
' JOSEPH E. CRISP.
