SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 618,365, dated January 24, 1899.

Be it known that I, IDA W. PENNEY, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Buffalo,

ment in Ribbon-Needles, otherwise known as Tape-Needles or Bodkins, such as are usedin beading, insertion, &c., of which the following is a specification.

The object of my improvement is to provide an eye for such a needle that will perinitthe use of ribbons of different widths in the same needle, which will allow a ribbon wider than the needle itself to be used without making it necessary to double or twist the ribbon in threading the same, that will hold the ribbons, whether the same be of the narrowest width or of a width equal to the length of the slit constituting the eye, preventing them from twisting or turning, and which makes it possible to thread the needle very easily, whether the ribbon be narrow or wide. I attain these objects by means of the slit at the top of the needle constituting the eye (illustrated in the accompanying drawings) and formed by a narrow slit starting from a point near the outer edge of the needle and proceeding away from the point of the needle in a curved line to a point opposite the point of the needle, and thence toward the point of the needle and in a curved line to a point substantially opposite the place of beginning, and thereby forming a tongue out of that portion of the needle included between the legs of the narrow slit. Owing to the peculiar formation of the eye,-the ribbon, of whatever one of the intermediate sizes within the lim its hereinbefore mentioned, is held in the needle in such manner as to prevent its wrinkling or twisting by means of that portion of the needle between the legs of the slit forming a tongue, which said portion of the needle is marked 00 in the accompanying draw ings and, as hereinbefore stated, is adapted equally as well to all ribbons of the different sizes of widths described in the foregoing part of this specification. The needle, being perfectly plain, passes through without catching in the beading, and the manner in which the ribbon is held in this slit or eye admits of the ribbon passing through without catching its ends in the beading-a feature which is not possessed by any other ribbonneedle or bodkin heretofore used and which will allow a ribbonwider than the needle itself to be usede. g., the ribbon-needle which holds the ribbon by means of a clamp.

Figure 1 in the accompanying drawings represents the needle. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the slit at the top of the needle, forminga tongue and constituting the eye.

I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A tape-needle of flat metal having an eye comprising a curvilinear slit starting near one edge of the needle and proceeding in a curved course to an opposite point near the other edge, forming the tongue X, as set forth.
