SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,283, dated May 10, 1904.
Application filed December 31, 1903. Serial No. 187,374. (No model.)
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT V. J. IRELAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at O0- rona, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bodkins, of which the following is a specification.
The objects of my improvement are to provide a bodkin which may be easily threaded, in which tape or ribbono'f various widths may be used, in which the tape or ribbon will be securely held in place in the eye of the bodkin while being drawn through beading or other material and the tape or the bodkin will not be caught therein or otherwise impeded during such operation, and the more force that is used in drawing the tape the tighter it will be held in the eye of the bodkin. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the bodkin threaded with ribbon. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the other side. Fig. 3 is a top view. Fig. 4 is a side view, and Fig. 5 shows a beading through which tape is drawn.

B is the bodkin, provided with the lanceolar-shaped space or eye E, formed by bending the strip or part 3 and the strips or parts 2 2 in opposite directions and out of plane with the main part of the bodkin.
4 is the tapered end of the eye.
1 is the point of the bodkin.
6 is a piece of heading provided with holes 7 through which is passed the tape or ribbon 5.
The strip or part 3 and the strips or parts 2 2, as shown, are spread apart or curved or bent in opposite directions and out of plane with the main part of the bodkin and arranged to form a tapered space between them; but the part 3 only may be formed out of plane with the main part, or the parts 2 2 only may be so formed, leaving one side of the eye straight, without avoiding my invention. The
bodkin throughout its length is smooth, hav ing nothing to catch in the fabric through which it is drawn or that will cause the tape to catch therein or be impeded in its passage therethrough. By this construction I obtain a bodkin that is easily threaded and in which tapes or ribbons of different widths may be used. In threading the bodkin the end of the tape in its flat state or condition is passed through the eye and then folded back, so as to lie flat against, preferably under, and in line with the main part of the tape, as shown in Fig. 1, and in this position assists in retaining the tape in place in the eye. The portion of the tape directly in the eye is held in a flat position by the curve-shaped edge or side strips 2 2 and the curve-shaped central strip 3, as shown, and the tape being drawn back to the tapered end 4 of the eye is securely retained in place in the eye thereby. The more force that is used in drawing the tape through the heading the tighter it will become held or wedged in the tapered end 4 of the eye and between the projecting side strips 2 E2 and the oppositely-projecting central strip 3. The eye may be of diamond or other shape, but
' must be provided with a tapered rear end.
I claim as my invention 1. In a bodkin, edge strips forming one side of the eye of the bodkin and a central strip forming the other side of the eye spread apart and arranged to form a tapered space between them. 7
2. In a bodkin, curve-shaped edge strips forming one side of the eye of the bodkin and a curve-shaped central strip forming the other side of the eye.
3. In a bodkin, projecting edge strips forming one side of the eye of the bodkin and an oppositely-projecting central strip forming the other side of the eye.
